Oh well, I suppose it was good while it lasted, but CyberGold is the latest paid to surf company to bite the dust.
Cybergold offered cold hard cash for clicks. Two or three times a week I'd get an e mail offering me from 5c to 25c to click on an ad. I clicked, I earned. Overnight my nickel hit my account. But no anymore, this is a dead website.
There were occassional problems, Cybergold occasionally froze a reward for a period of time, seemingly until the vendor confirmed your genuine interest, and on several occasions rewards have disappeared forever. However, the transfers mostly occured automatically. Or at least they did until CyberGold shuffled off this mortal coil.
Bigger sums from 50c through to $5 could be earned without spending any money if you signed up to web sites, mailing lists or online casinos. There was also the option to earn even more through shopping partners and Cybergold rewards of between $5 and $50 were available if I signed up for a new credit card, joined a book club or subscribed to magazines. I guess not many people took up this option, otherwise CyberGold may not have headed to that great DNS in the sky.
Cash could be spent with shopping partners, mailed as a cheque, credited to a credit card or donated to a specified charity. One good point for Cybergold compared to other cash reward schemes, is that they would credit your earnings straight onto your Visa card, with a tiny minimum, so the money does not have to go through your bank. This means it is instantly available for splurging, or if you have credit card debt, it’s a tiny step towards paying off whichever evil empire you are with. But now that empire will dig its claws further in to you hile Cybergold pushes up the daisies.
As one of my preferred charities, the I Have A Dream educational foundation was a partner, I chose to give my ill gotten gains to help provide financial support to allow low income teens to attend college and get out of the poverty trap. Over the last 18 months or so I earned about $50, without spending a bean, gambling, or being overrun by junk mail. Not a fortune, but enough to keep me clicking, after all I have a permanent speedy connection so it only costs me seconds. It is too much to hope that CyberGold is simply pining for the Fjords.
The wall was neatly whitewashed, ready for the writing to go on it, back in January when CyberGold announced a partnership with MyPoints. Both companies continued mailing their customers, but I can only imagine that advertisers would not want to target the same market twice through very similar media and so have over the last six months been gently nudged towards MyPoints. Looking back over the last couple of months I've probably received less cash to click e mails from CyberGold, and more of their messages pointing me towards websites where I can save rather than earn money. It all pointed to CyberGold heading off to those pearly firewalls.
This morning I received an e mail entitled 'important information about your CyberGold account'. Normally I delete these kinds of things straight away as they tend to be dull, but I read this one. It told me that CyberGold will finally curl up its' toes on August 31, 2001. If you are a member I'd advise cashing out sooner rather than later.
