The Bottom Line This is my entry to Guildenstern’s Desert Island Discs W/O.

The idea of this write off is : if you were to be stranded on a desert island, and you could bring 8 pieces of music, a luxury and a book ; what would you choose to bring ?

Here’s my answer :

My 8 pieces of music :

Across The Universe Fiona Apple

This song is a cover of the famous Beatles’ song by Fiona Apple. I found that song on the internet and it’s become one of my favorites. I like the monotonous feeling you hear in Fiona’s voice. I think that Fiona Apple really has a gorgeous voice. The lyrics also can apply to many situations I’ve lived. I like to listen to this song when I’m in a melancholic mood and everything around me is just gray. Like right now, where I can see the rain falling on Santiago’s streets (I hate winter…).

You Learn Alanis Morissette

I chose to bring the acoustic version of the song since I like it more than the original. To me this song is about getting on with your life, being alive. The chorus expresses all the feelings we go through during our lives. These feelings are part of our lives and they are the ones that make us stronger. We should not allow some of them to destroy us. This is the song I like to listen when I need to be cheered up. It makes me realize that life isn’t that long so we should just enjoy ourselves while we can.

Pennyroyal Tea Nirvana

I only discovered Nirvana recently and for some reason this song is always stuck in my head. I know that this song was written about some medicine called ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ that was dangerous for pregnant women since it would kill their fetus. But for some weird reason I always think of it when I’m drinking tea. I find tea pretty disgusting and I will only drink it when my stomach aches and my mom forces me to drink it. At these moments I always remember the lines ‘I sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea/ Distill the life that’s inside of me’. I also think of the latter line when I take these ugly medicines I’m allergic to but still have to take them otherwise I would be rolling on the floor because of pain. I think those medicines are gonna kill me someday…

La Isla Bonita Madonna

After a depressing song that reminds me how pathetic my life is, something upbeat. This is a pretty obvious choice because it has the word ‘island’ in the title (‘isla’ means island in Spanish). Besides the song reminds of my mom and my childhood. My mom was a big Madonna fan and I remember listening to this song all the time when I was a kid. I still enjoy listening to this song and I could dance to it on my desert island. It also reminds me of my piano teacher since this is the only song I accepted to sing during a karaoke party she threw for the end of the schoolyear. I associate this song with great moments so I really had to bring it.

Wish You Were HerePink Floyd

So far, this is the only Pink Floyd song I’ve heard. I like the lyrics, to me they’re about disillusionment, wondering about all the things that surround you because the person you love isn’t here. But what I enjoy the most is the piano. I’m a big fan of songs that have a piano in it and I think the piano in this song is just beautiful. Simple but still beautiful. This is the song I like to listen to when someone I love isn’t around. Most of the time it’s my father since he travels so much because of his job. Sometimes it’s also about my friends in France that I miss a lot when I’m abroad. Like right now : balou, magli, jess, soprett’, doudou, gini, val, mimi, lulu, lolo…….I miss you so much girls ! See you on September…

Never Say GoodbyeBon Jovi

Well, Bon Jovi is a band I really like because two years ago they became my fave band and my best friends. I was in a very small Arabic country called Bahrain, going to a French school where I was the eldest pupil. They were three more people in my classroom so as you can imagine I couldn’t be more bored. At the same time I discovered a band called Bon Jovi and their music was there at the right time. Whenever I felt really bad I would start singing in my head a song from them and then I felt better. Never Say Goodbye is special because even if I won’t deny that its lyrics are kinda cheesy, I could relate to the lyrics when I was leaving Bahrain. Though I was happy to go back to France after a year spent there, I realized I was actually attached to some people there and leaving everything knowing that I would probably never come back made me sad. I used to cry while listening to this song because of the line ‘never say goodbye’. So whenever I hear this song it reminds me of Bahrain, and I have to admit I still cry when I hear it. Even though my life in Bahrain isn’t the happiest period of my life, I still want to bring a piece of it to my island.

Name Goo Goo Dolls

The Goo Goo Dolls are my favorite band at the moment, and I just love John Rzeznik’s voice, so I had to bring one of their song. I chose to bring Name because again, I like the sad feeling you can hear in the song. To me the song is about disillusionment, probably my favorite feeling as I write this review ! I think the song is great, both musically and lyrically. I don’t really associate it with any particular moment of my desperate life, I just like that song.

Sexy French Affair

I still had a lot of songs on my mind that I would like to have with me but after I realized I had chosen some pretty depressing songs, I thought I should bring one that is upbeat and that will remind me some really good times (my fave classmates, spring, graduating in French, some really good laughs…). That’s why I chose this song. It’s kind of a techno song where a girl sings to a guy how sexy he is. That’s when things start to get funny : the girl is French but sings in English – her accent is hilarious, she is trying to have a sexy voice and the lyrics are pretty stupid to be honest. But the chorus really is catchy. What makes this song special ? Well, believe it or not but it became me and my friends’ anthem during the last months of school. I liked the song because I thought it was funny and so I made all my friends listen to it. As I said the chorus is catchy so we all had the song on our minds and then it became sort of a joke : during classes we would look at each other, give us a sexy eyebrow and utter the word ‘sexy’. Not very loud though, so that the teachers wouldn’t catch us. I dedicate this song to my friend Mimi. Because of her and this song I had some great laughs and probably the best moments of this schoolyear. So thanks Mimi for making me laugh :-)

I realize that my review is pretty long by now, so sorry if you fell asleep while reading. Today I just didn’t feel like being funny. Maybe it is the bad weather, maybe the fact that I am just very tired…

Anyway, here’s the rest of my review for those who are still awake.

My luxury :

I thought of a lot of things, mostly products to keep some hygiene, but since the island already has a CD player (otherwise, how could I possibly play all these songs ?), I figured it could also have some beauty products. So I decided to choose something related to music : a piano. The piano is my favorite instrument because you can play both classical and modern music, something you can’t do with many instruments. I’ve been learning to play the piano for five years, but unfortunately, since I started a bit old, I’ve never had time to practice as much as I’d like to. Bringing a piano to my island could be a great opportunity to improve my piano skills and maybe try to play by ear. And actually maybe I could even start singing properly ! (I am the worst singer on earth…)

My book :

I haven’t read that many books, and no book has impressed me so much that I could read it a zillion times and not get tired of it. That’s why I decided I would bring Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. I guess you all know what the story is about so I won’t write about it. I find the book very sad but also very beautiful because one gets really attached to the characters of Jean Valjean , Fantine and of course Cosette . A few years ago I borrowed it at the library. But I only borrowed two books, not knowing there was a third book.. Unfortunately when I came back and looked for the third book, I didn’t find it and I still haven’t found it. I definitely would like to read the end.
