Loyalhanna Pennsylvania Lager: Latrobe Aims for Yuengling?
by MiDoyle | Aug 05 '03
Loyalhanna Pennsylvania Lager comes close to Yuengling Lager but falls short on my tasting impressions. At $4.49 a six, it is worth a try though.

David: It's not an all malt concoction, though that certainly sounds like a good idea to me (especially with fall approaching). Lollyhanna lager is an OK beer, but doesn't approach the kind of consistency and flavor of Yuengling. When I'm in the mood for a basic lager, I think I'll still reach for that one first. cheers

Loyalhanna?

I suppose it'll be worth trying, if only for that ringing endorsement you gave it...

I see they aren't straying far from their trademark cooked-corn flavor popularized in regular old RR. Any idea if this is an all-malt?

(I don't know how I never saw this one pop up in the recent content list last week. I must have been out of it for awhile.)

Beerlover: It will get there eventually. I think the test market is PA/NJ/NY right now. Now, if I could get Dominion beers up here (especially the Pils), I'd be happy myself. cheers

John: I've always drank Rolling Rock and the other brands you mention aren't even mentioned on the RR site which is a bit curious since Labatt's is known for keeping established brands going and seems to encourage variety. Loyalhanna is an experiment so maybe Latrobe is now looking to be more diverse. Not a bad beer, but I doubt they will overtake Yuengling as a regional favorite. cheers

Sounds to me like they are definitely going after some of Yuengling's sales, though I'm not sure that will fly. This isn't the first time they've done something like this. Many moons ago they rolled out three specialty beers under the Latrobe name: Black Bavarian, American Pale Ale, and Bohemian Pilsner. They were all surprisingly good.

Cheers!
John
