Why I'm Writing This
Epinions user sherkarr has recently written a review of barnesandnoble.com bestowing upon it the title of Best Place to Buy Books Online. I beg to differ. Now, I'm not a brand-loyal type, I take my business wherever I can get good service and low prices. Both of these sites fall into that category, but Amazon has become my destination of choice. So this review is to fire back and pledge my love for shopping on the Amazon.
What's so Great?
Every time I sign on to Amazon, I'm greeted with "Welcome, Matt - we have recommendations for you!". You see, based upon my personal collection of books and DVDs, (which I entered into Amazon's database long ago) they look for similar or related items and recommend them to me. I have bought several of these 'recommended' items, and I haven't been disappointed yet. And here's the great part - if you buy a 'recommended' item and don't like it, you get a refund. That is a nice feature. Anyway... As I was saying, another feature I've come to love is the 'Wish List'. I don't always have time or money to get the items I want, so I save them to a Wish List to go back and buy later. In addition, anyone who wants to can go and search for my list and buy items off of it to send to me. (If you care to do this, you are more than welcome to :)) Another fabulous feature is the ability to quickly find used copies of titles that interest me at a very low price through the site. I have used this feature many times, too. Unfortunately I am still waiting for a used copy of Isaac Asimov's I, Robot that I ordered about 2 weeks ago. Hopefully it'll show. Other than that, all of my experiences buying used items have been great. Of course, sometimes Amazon's own prices are so low that it is not even necessary to buy a used item.
Selection
I'm not going to go into the vast amount of goods available, but it includes all kinds of print and film media, electronics, etc. Every item that I ever looked for on the site, I've found. That is saying a lot. I couldn't be more pleased with the staggering number of things that can be purchased from this one website. It's phenomenal. It could make a grown man cry. Simply put, you won't be let down - particularly if the item you are seeking is a book or magazine.
Useability
Of course since Amazon.com is one of the internet's largest retail sites it has a very professionally designed site with a comfortable look and feel. It is laid out intuitively, the colors are pleasant, and the features are easily accessible. Ordering is usually a snap, and it can even save your shipping and billing information (if you want it to) to make future checkouts even faster.
Bottom Line
I love the site. I've done a lot of business through it, and will continue to do so. It's not my exclusive 'net shopping home or anything, but it is definitely a favorite. Unfortunately Amazon is famous for being an e-tailer that has yet to make a profit. Hopefully that will turn around soon, because I'd hate to see an old friend like this one die. The positives of the site are nearly endless, and I don't really have any negative comments to make. The only way they could make it much better is to give everything away - but that isn't going to happen. Take my advice - check out this site and use it. You will be glad that you did. And be sure to take the time to set up a profile and 'build your collection' so the site will be able to make intelligent recommendations for you.
