by snsh | Aug 10 '03
Choose a fungicidal drug for fastest cure. Use fungistatic drugs as a backup.

I cannot verify the effectiveness of Lamisil AT. I can verify, however, that my fungal infections--when they occur, laugh at standard Lotrimin, thrive on standard Lamisil, and happily ignore thick layers of clotrimazole. The ONLY treatment I've ever tried that gets rid of them is Lotrimin Ultra. Actually, there used to be a prescription antifungal cream with the same active ingredient as Lotrimin Ultra, which also worked (It had better, at >$100 per tube!)... but it's no longer needed, since an equivalent product is now sold OTC.

I presently have a major problem, though, as I'm traveling in Italy, where they've never heard of butenafine. In fact, I found this eOpinions page, trying to research a substitute. I bought a tube of clotrimazole (The ONLY choice at the farmacia), hoping it will at least slow down the spread, until I get back to the US.

Lessson: If you're prone to recurring fungal infections, as I am, remember:
"Lotrimin Ultra... Don't leave home without it."

The writer is correct on all counts; he says the better drugs are better; he says the more expensive drugs are more expensive; he gives an excellent suggestion to combine antifungals, as each has a different mechanism of action. I hadn't thought of that, and so I'm grateful for the idea. Bravo!
