All I Want to Say, But Can't

The Bottom Line There are times in our lives when communication bogs down! So writing a Poem to yourself often helps.

ALL I WANT TO SAY, BUT CAN'T

I'm restless tonight and I guess I know why;
You're snoring in bed -- the full moon is high.
Our children are grown -- my hair's turning gray,
And it seems like my whole world is slipping away.
Deep in my soul a slow ache is spreading,
Connected, somehow, with thoughts of our wedding.
We were so young then, so very brave,
For love was eternal and there was no grave,
Nor sickness, nor sadness, nor breathtaking pain,
Just laughter -- and malteds, diluted with rain.

We've climbed all our mountains and forded our streams,
But I wonder where we spilled all those dreams.

The house is too silent -- the shadows too dark.
Remember the time we kissed in the park
And our children giggled 'cause their Mom and Dad
Were acting so stupid? Boy, you sure got mad!
They really were cute kids, so much like you,
And when they were good, they resembled me, too.
I wish they were back here, tucked into their rooms,
But that's being foolish -- a ripe rosebud blooms,
And full-feathered birds fly away from their nests;
No doubt, if they stayed, they'd only be pests.

But I can't help thinking, perhaps Momma Bird
Weeps for the sound of the cheeps she once heard.

I'm sure that by morning I'll be all right,
Fears always seem worse in the dead of the night.
Then scatter like marbles at breaking of day.
Oh, now I recall what I could not say:
Today, when we quarreled, I said many things
That I did not mean, so remembering stings.
I pray that you'll know I'm not angry with you,
I'm mad that your doctors have given up, too.
But I'll keep believing, so dream on, my dear,
Don’t wake up and catch me all red-eyed out here.

Life is so sad, yet it's magical, too;
For me, all the magic has always been you
