izzygirl's Full Review: Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation 1
Hello everyone, refer to the title. If you are looking into playing this game, um, where were YOU. The thing was released four years ago! The only way I can persuade your opinion is perhaps through my undying love.
As far as I am concearned, EVERYONE should play this. Play it more than once! Heck, play it three times or more if you want! It's kinda lonely being the only freak in the world who's beaten it beginning to end over 20 times (I lost track after 17, but it's been at LEAST 3 since then...)
What causes me to be so convinced that Final Fantasy VII is the greatest RPG ever created even though I am fully aware it is not?
Well, first of all, let me adress everyone's primary complaint:
"It's too futuristic."
... ooookay... not really. It's... er... industrial. Y'know, steam machines, lotsa angsty populace.
FFVIII is futuristic. Xenogears is futuristic.
FFVII is industiral.
I will admit that compared to other FF games, it's further along the way, but this is NOT the game where the series turned away from medieval. If my memory serves me correctly, did FFVI not feature a world on the verge of technology? Lots of steam powered inventions and dark, oily factories. A friend of mine, who hopped on the bandwagon with VIII, always considered FFVII to be more like the previous fantasies until the release of IX, but even then, when face with IV, she remarked:
"What are they talking about! VI and VII are practically set in the same universe!"
The only difference being that VII has cars and TV, and everything's a bit more rusted and decayed.
VII's universe is a very depressing one.
With that out of the way, allow me to explain my love of this game...
who remembers those commercials on MuchMusic (MTV)? Sure, this was way back in 97', but us gamers have good enough memories. Not ALL of our brain cells are rotted out of our skull from sitting in front of the box.
Those commercials convinced me I needed a playstation.
So at the tender age of 11, I unwrapped the gleaming, gray rectangle and recieved FFVII disuised in a gronla bar box.
Before I knew it, I had played my first RPG through.
There you go folks. That's probably why. I was young, and innocent and unknowing and Final Fantasy VII changed my life.
But really, now that I've moved on and played so many more things, what keeps me coming back?
Memories.
This is one of those games you'll play, and years afterwards, a single scene may work it's way into your head and you are overtaken by a sudden desire to see it again... and again... and again!
You become attatched to every character, despire the not-so great translations and cliches.
Hell, I even love Tifa despite the fact I hate her and her whiny, clingy, scantly-clad self. o.O
The character development is weak on some characters, and strong on others. It's a dark story and there are some things that may take a bit of thought to get. (SPOILER I do believe it took me my fourth time through to decide whether Cloud was a clone or not...)
... and Sephiroth is simply the greatest villian of all time (video-game wise, of course).
Great music, great graphics, great characters, perfect balance of drama and intrigue with just the right amount of humour. As I mentioned above, the translation will sometimes leave you scratching your head, but this is truly one of the greatest RPGs ever made, if not because it's a good game, because it made RPGs popular and encouraged game companies to release more of them over seas.
An epic adventure across 3 cd-roms. What begins as a rebelion against an evil corporation becomes much more. And what erupts goes beyond imagination. ...More at eBay
