"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."

Dear Napthalia: Yes, Alexander had his face put on coins which circulated to the edges of the known World, and beyond. They were still being circulated, even minted, 400 years after his death.

There is a theory that Christ was recast, in a strange way, in the image of Alexander. The people of Central Asia regard him to this day as Satan, perhaps, from the rams' horns headdress he wore on some of his tetradrachms.

In today's World of Spin, the meaning of words and terms -- the creation of neologisms -- determines who will control The New World Order.

Well done.

I was just thinking the other day how the Orwellian ability to edit our opinions makes it so easy to deny we ever said anything stupid..

Language is too valuable to let it be abused without speaking out about it. When we run campaigns based only on sound bites, fame and party affiliation we do no one any favors. We need to demand more than sound bites. We need to demand substance.

An excellent piece, written with devastating precision. You go, girl!

The magazine the American Prospect's new issue, which i just got in the mail today, has all of five articles on the way English is being, and could be, used by the major parties. If you're curious, the articles should be online at http://www.prospect.org . Whether or not you'll learn new stuff, i'm not sure yet; but it's nice to see fellow fighters of the good fight.

best,

Language is a wonderful two-edged... (Reply to this comment)

sword. It offers a succinct verbal expression of our thought and intent and sadly a mask for mal-intent and agenda promotion as well. This use of language only serves the promotion of distrust and misunderstanding.
Nice piece, good topic, well done!

Very well thought out and very well stated. My current personal favorite is mean-spirited, a term which a politician uses to describe pretty much anyone from the opposing party.
