Ten Commandments in our courts, NO WAY!Aug 21 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Being very generous of the 10 commandments posted in the court of Alabama only 3 have anything to do with courts of law. Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court believes it is his right to have the 10 commandments posted in his court room. He claims that our nation is built on these ten commandments and that the symbol is important enough to be part of the Supreme Court. One most ask oneself has the judge even read the ten commandments? How do these 10 commandments fit into a criminal or civil court in the United States of America. I will now post the Ten commandments (the Christian 10 commandments) since I am a Jew they ones I am used to are a little different. That in itself is a major reason not to post 10 commandments in a court house. Recently when thinking about this issue I found a web page with 8 different versions of the ten commandments. A Jewish version, a Roman Catholic version, the King James version (protestant), and a few others. What version should a judge in Alabama use, seems a very important question. After posting the commandments I will explain why I think they should not be displayed in a court house in the United States of America. 1 I am the LORD your G-d, you shall have no other gods before me and You shall not make for yourself a graven image This is the first or second commandment depending on what version your read, but in the case of the Alabama court house this is number one. I ask the judge, what happens when a Native America enters your court house because he was assaulted, robbed, defrauded, discriminated against, or for any other reason. Your court house claims that No other G-d but the Lord is welcome here. Does that mean a good Christian can rob a Native American or an atheist? A judge willing to defy the Supreme court seems like a type of judge that would put his religion above that of the LAW. Also should we arrest people that have graven images? In the old days paintings were considered graven images. Many Jews believe Jesus on the Cross is a graven image. It strikes us as IDOL worship. 2 You shall not take the Name of the LORD your G-d in vain Is the judge willing to fine a man that says Jesus Christ? If I say Jesus Christ near him am I guilty of taking the Lords name in vain. My Lord is not Jesus Christ my lord is Hshm. In my religion writing G-ds name is a sin that is why I to G-D, should we fine this Judge for spelling out G-ds name in articles? I think so. 3 Keep holy the Sabbath day Is the judge willing to arrest or fine people that work on Friday? The Jewish Sabbath or should he arrest people that work on Sunday the Catholic Sabbath? 4 Honor your father and your mother Well I am in favor of this one, lets arrest every child in the cereal isle of a grocery store that is whining that they cant get their sugary cereal! 5 You shall not kill I am going out on a limb here but, DUH! I dont think we need a monument to state killing is wrong. That being said, in Judaism the translation is NOT MURDER. In America killing is not always a crime. Killing in self defense will not land you in jail, Murder though is a crime. 6 You shall not commit adultery I can understand placing this on in divorce court, but a criminal court, that is really not the place for it. 7 You shall not steal Once again DUH! I will assume most people agree stealing is a bad thing 8 You shall not bear false witness YES, Number 8! Finally a commandment that has SOME BEARING on a COURT OF LAW in America! One out of ten!!! 9 Your shall not cover your neighbors wife No court should ever judge a man or womans internal thoughts. If a man covets but does not act on the coveting then the court can never come into play. If a man thinks boy I would love to rob a bank, that is not a crime. Only the act of or planning to rob a bank is a crime. 10 You shall not covet your neighbors good This goes against the entire American way of life? Dont believe me? Why do people own SUVs because their neighbor owns an SUV. Americans have to have BIGGER and BETTER than their neighbor. This is what makes our economy tick. I am in favor or arresting people that buy an SUV bigger than their neighbor, just because they can, but I dont think Detroit would like that new policy. LETS SUM IT UP Being very generous of the 10 commandments posted in the court of Alabama only 3 have anything to do with courts of law. Stealing, false witness and murder. Another might have something to do with civil court, adultery. Yet number 1 alienated people our courts are supposed to protect, people that believe in another G-d or no G-d at all. In my hearts of hearts I do not understand why this judge doesnt see what is so plain, its not like its written in Hebrew so he doesnt understand, this is English and has NO PLACE in a court of law. |
