Back around 1991 or 1992, I'd dropped out of college and was living with my parents, working as a programmer and driving a delivery van on weekends. I had a lowly '286, which didn't even come with a hard drive. I had a 2400bps modem.
One week, I realized that somehow, I'd managed to wind up with about $500 in my bank account. I guess I hadn't been spending my paychecks fast enough or something. So I decided to get a faster modem.
At that point in time, the fastest modems were 14.4kbps, and the coolest modem was the Practical Peripherals PM14400FXSA. It had fax capabilities, it was 14.4, but best of all, it was the shape of a brick standing on edge, and had an actual LCD readout that showed status and stuff, instead of the plain old red blinking LED's most other modems had.
It had just been announced, and when I called around, I had a hard time finding it. Finally, I called PC Connection's toll-free number, and they had it. Not only did they have it, but they were willing to ship it to me overnight, for Saturday delivery... and they'd let me pay C.O.D.! Wow. I got the money out of my bank account, and was delighted when the delivery van (FedEx or somebody similar) managed to find my folks' house. The modem was so new, none of my friends would believe I'd actually gotten it!
Eventually, I got better hardware, more peripherals, and moved a few times. And I kept in touch with PC Connection. If my laptop drive died, I knew they'd have a replacement - and probably a bigger one, at that. If something arrived and didn't work, I knew they'd replace it. When I got a digital camera, sure enough, they had the memory cards and adapters I needed for it.
I also greatly appreciated their willingness to respect my desires when it came to catalogs. Since I didn't buy things all the time, I didn't feel there was any point in getting the catalog all the time, so I asked them not to send it to me - and they stopped. If I wanted to order something, I'd call up, update my address if I'd moved, and ask for a catalog.
Of course, once they got on the web, it was easy to check any time, without needing to have a catalog. And they never, ever, sent e-mail spam to me or anyone else I know, unlike some of their competitors.
When I first started doing business with PC Connection, they had been voted "best mail-order company" by PC World magazine 2 or 3 times, and "best support and software" by Mac World once or twice. They've now been rated best by PC World something like nine times in the last 11 years, plus a bunch of other awards. Pretty impressive, overall.
The biggest surprise came after our last move. We'd always lived on the East Coast of the US, and it wasn't a big surprise to get things overnight there, since PC Connection's warehouses were in New Hampshire and Ohio. But when we moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, I was very surprised that I still got things overnight!
There are very few mail-order companies out there that get repeat business from me. PC Connection has certainly earned my repeat business and loyalty. They're the first place I recommend to family and friends.
