The Bottom Line Is this Bottom Line still here..?
Well I did 2000 and 2001 list, so it's only fitting that I now give you my faves of 2002. As usual I'm sure there will be one or two that are controversial.. can't help it man. I liked em!
There are probably some greats that I somehow missed seeing... or missed realizing they were form this year. If so I'll update when I see them or realize a missed favorite. It happens. This was just a really good year for movies!
The Two Towers ~ Part two in Lord of the Rings trilogy adapted from the books by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tis about hobbits, and wizards, and elves.. oh my! You must see the Fellowship of the Ring one before you see this one...and the third will be out this December. Hooya!
The Brotherhood of the Wolf ~ Brotherhood of the Wolf is about things being amiss in 17th century France. Very amiss. Folks are being torn apart by a mysterious beast! Things initially point to a wolf, and may lead you to believe there might be a werewolf running about the countryside... don't bet on it! The Chevalier de Fronsac and his blood-brother Mani are sent by the King to see to gather clues and make sketches and such..and to prepare the body of the beast for keeping once it is killed.
The Count of Monte Cristo ~ The ultimate in revenge tales, coupled with swashbuckling! What more could a woman possibly want? The timeless tale by Alexander Dumas about a man who gets screwed royaly but gets back at the jerks most spectacularly. Wonderful job by both James Caviezel and Guy Pearce.
Minority Report ~ Now, I really dislike Tom Cruise a great deal, and bucked seeing this one for the longest time because of it. That's a shame. This is a very good flick! One takeon what happens when we start anticipating crimes and arresting folks before the crime is actually committed..
Secretary ~ The warped world of the self-mutilator and how she adapts and finds love with her boss.. who is equally messed up. This one turned the term 'issues' on it's ear in a delightful way! You guys will like the spanking scenes. heh. Stars James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
About a Boy ~ Hugh Grant plays a single playboy, Will, who lives on the royalties of a one-hit-wonder song his father wrote. He's quite happy being a shallow git and living for himself, until he hits on the idea to make-up a child and go to single parents meetings in order to seek out single females who may be in need of his temporary allure...Along the way he meets a boy, the son of one of these mothers, and suddenly realizes he does, after all, care about someone other than himself. I know, it sounds sappy. But it's so well done with the perfect amount of humor interjected here and there. It works, damn it. It simply does.
The Pianist ~ Excellent movie dealing with the Holocaust and how one man came to survive it. There is just no way you can watch this one and not be moved by it in some way. Adrien Brody turns in a spectacular performance as Wladyslaw Szpilman.
Solaris ~ You either love it or you hate it. Remake of the 1972 Andrei Tarkovsky movie? Or new version of the novel by Stanislaw Lem? This is up for debate. Either way, I completely enjoyed this movie starring George Clooney as Psychiatrist Chris Kelvin who is sent to a space base outside of Solaris to figure out just what has gone wrong..
Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets ~ Another second installment to a series, this one is the continuation of young Harry Potter now in his second year at Hogwarts School of Wizardry. A wonderfully magical joy ride adapted from the books by J.K. Rowling.
Reign of Fire ~ Reign of Fire is about letting sleeping dragons lie, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup. heh. While mining the depths in London, a cavern is discovered. Being the only one small enough to fit through the opening, young Quinn goes in to explore and encounters a thing from fairy tales: A huge fire-breathing, and very hungry, male dragon. The story continues with Quinn as an adult leading a retinue of refugees, trying to keep them safe from the hordes of dragons. The world has been all but destroyed in the ensuing years.
