It's almost peculiar-- (Reply to this comment)
by lyoness913
you and I have very similar taste in movies. Guy Ritchie's 'Lock', and Snatch are in my 'forever loved and watched' collection. (I know you said nothing about Snatch, but I had to add it in) I've never seen Fight Club but uhh..I think I'll avoid it. Your explanation of the movie reminded me of something that happened this past week. While on vacation in Toronto, my parents' neighbour started talking about the recent best seller The Divinci Code by Dan Brown. He spoke of the Knights Templar and Divinci's homosexuality like he was the first person to ever think such thoughts or discover such concepts. Of course, between discussing the book he talked about what a great highschool football player he was....
I enjoyed this,
Thanks,
Summer

Argument Club (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
An idiosyncratic list as i'd've expected; occasionally i agree with it, several times i disagree, and the majority of the time i have no frickin' clue (i've already put Chocolat on my queue at your behest today, and Jesus of Montreal on my videostore search list, so i might go back and consider your 1999 choices more carefully later). There's only one disagreement i feel any desire to mention, though: namely, i think you misread Fight Club.
Yes, its commentary on American life is a wide ways from original -- although it deserves credit for expressing the commentary with eloquence and style (as you yourself have pointed out, "predictable" is not, in itself, a bad thing). But all of the major social commentary is delivered through people who are completely bugfuuck insane. And most of the insane people are quasi-sympathetic ... so, whether or not the movie is good, it's got a lot more layers than you're recognizing.
Oh well. Charming write-up as always. Cheers!

Good list (Reply to this comment)

I'm glad you were able to take down such undeserving films like "American Beauty" a few notches. And I'm glad you DIDN'T take down "The Sixth Sense" a few notches. It seems it's always fashionable to trash any movie that is successful.

Interesting List! I always appreciate your insight, and agree with most of what you've said in this review. However...
I loved October Sky! This was truly a feel good movie, and how many of those can we brag about today?
Did you see Simon Birch? Okay, it's a tear jerker, but wonderful!
Just had to leave my two bits. Great writing as always.

I absolutely love your Fight Club commentary there. From the beginning I already knew I was going to have a tough time weeding out just exactly what it is about the movie that bothered me, but you (and Dan) about damn near nailed it.
I think the reason people like it is not because they really want to be told what they already know or what they've already heard, but because they want to hear it expressed in a way that is convincing enough that they have a reason to hope that whomever is being mocked by the commentary doing the telling would actually watch it themselves and change their ways because of it. Nothing more fun than a movie that you can watch through the eyes of your worst enemy, and fantasize till you're blue in the face about them seeing it themselves. Such is the life of deranged, self-possessed individuals like myself.

Well, I know who doesn't know... me. ;)
All I got out of it was a lot of frustration and bitter disappointment.
Ah well.
Appreciate the comment.

Not if you count it as '99.

I'd only concur on two of the ten, the lists (inclusion and exclusion) are interestingly discussed.
