Re: Great job. (Reply to this comment)

Well, I meant that the length was less noticeable or shown whereas in the first LOTR film, the long duration was quite apparent, not that that's a bad thing. Thanks for the comment.

Great job. (Reply to this comment)

But could you explain what this means?
"...far less ostensible in length..."
Confused,

Well, I wouldn't really regard the film itself as the perfect romantic movie but I felt the chemistry between the characters was impeccable and lovable. And yeah, I really should have seen Chicago by now, it winning best pic and all. Though I'm not sure how much I'm trusting the judgment of the Academy these days. Thanks.

I have yet to see Rabbit-Proof Fence, but it seems like it'll be decent indicated by the general feedback and that Noyce's The Quiet American was rather good. Thanks.

If you think that was the perfect romance, well, I don't know about you! You really should see Chicago.

notable exceptions and switcheroos (e.g. Spirited Away, my number 1; Piano Teacher, nowhere in Top 10), we're pretty much the same person.

10 Best Films (Reply to this comment)

Interesting list. However, I would probably have put "Rabbit Proof Fence" a little higher. I though the acting by the novice child actresses was excellent, and the DVD commentary was very well done. Sheila

Re: Spider? (Reply to this comment)

Yeah, I suppose Spider was technically in 2002 even though i didn't see it until a few weeks (or months) into 2003. Darn those film festivals that I never get to attend. Thanks for the comments, I just read your list and I'm glad to see an interest in similar films, save the PDL bashing of course.

Spider? (Reply to this comment)
by omophagia
I know this has been a point of fairly widespread confusion, but was Spider, in fact, released in 2002?
Perhaps this is just my fault for not counting film festival premieres as "theatrical releases." But I don't think that I'm alone in doing so-- if I am, Spider is criminally under-represented on 2002 Best-Of lists, giving me hope that more people are counting it as a 2003 release. I know it's easily the best film I've seen thus far this year.
Couldn't disagree more about Punch-Drunk Love, and I always seem to catch The Piano Teacher at its halfway point on the Sundance Channel. Otherwise, we have quite a bit of overlap here.
This is an excellent piece of writing. One of the best essays I've read on this site in quite some time.
