The Bottom Line From Disney to Pixar, to Dreamworks and Warner Bros., I have done my best to find the animated films which are among the best of all time.
The animated film has always been an important part of the movie industry. From the first animated feature to the more recent computer animated blockbusters, studios have producing many animated films for nearly a century. By far the most prolific of these studios is Disney, who broke open the feature length animation business with the release of Snow White, a film that changed the face of the film industry forever. However, I have not forgotten that times, and the interests of movie goers have changed, so in my list I have tried to include the most prolific films from the present, as well as the past. I have done my best to accurately produce a list of the best of the best of these films. Thank You for viewing my list, and I hope you can see all these films for yourself to appreciate their greatness. Honorable Mention:Because there are so many great animated films I feel it necessary to also include these films which are worthy of praise. The Jungle Book, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Herculese, Toy Story( 1 and 2),Shrek, A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc., Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, Dumbo, Sleeping Beauty, Iron Giant, and the Hunchback of Notre Dame among others. 10-Finding Nemo: This loveable fish with an adventurous spirit has captured the hearts of millions of movie viewers, and although it is a newcomer, I still feel it deserves a place among the best of all time. This film succeeds on every level. And with its gorgeous animation and funny and loveable characters Finding Nemo earns a spot at number ten on this list. 9-Peter Pan: One of Walt Disney's greatest works, that has set the standard for the depiction of the Peter Pan films. A cast of loveable heroes, the terrifying Captain Hook, along with the funny Smee and Crocodile bring this story to life. Add some of the greatest songs ever written and Peter Pan earns it's spot at #9 on my list. 8-Aladdin: This film is separates itself from the rest with it's terrific Academy Award winning songs by Alan Menken and Tim Rice. The story follows a peasant named Aladdin who discovers a genie played by the hysterical Robin Williams. Aladdin then uses the genie to win over a princess named Jasmine. However, a sorcerer named Jafar and his parrot Iago desire the genies power as well, which faces Aladdin with the challenge of defeating Jafar while still winning the love of Princess Jasmine. This films terrific story and enchanting songs will be embraced by all ages making it #9 on my list. 7-Snow White: The original animated movie, Snow white is still captivating audiences. It is the story of a beautiful young girl with an evil stepmother who is jealous of Snow White's beauty. The wicked queen then casts Snow White into a deep sleep, where she can only be awoken by love's first kiss. After so many years this classic still holds up among todays best. The memorable songs and terrifying villain keep this movie in the top ten despite its age. 6-Tarzan: This film version of the beloved story of Tarzan is brought to life magnificently through cutting edge animation. The way the animators envisioned Tarzan as an extreme sportsman allows a whole new generation of movie goers to connect with this character. Phil Collins also adds a fantastic array of songs which really makes the film unique. With an original twist on the Tarzan stories, and great songs by singer/songwriter Phil Collins Tarzan makes it to #6 on my list. 5-101 Dalmatians: Another classic film with great music, and a heart warming adventure. This film tells the story of the romance between two dog owners and their dalmatians Pongo and Perdita. The dogs newborn puppies are stolen by the evil Cruella Deville. With a wonderful story and a terrific villain 101 Dalmatians has become a classic film which can be enjoyed by all ages. 4-Pocahantas: This historical epic, brought to life with wonderful music by Alan Menken is a terrific love story. Detailing the relationship between an Native American woman and an English explorer, John Smith(Mel Gibson). However their people are preparing to go to war. Its themes go deeper then many of the other animated films and this movie has a great deal to offer, for viewers of all ages. These factors put this film at #4 on my list. 3-The Little Mermaid: Howard Ashman and Alan Menken revived the animated musical with this fantastic film version of the classic story. This is the tale of Ariel, a mermaid who dreamed of life on the land, but is forbidden by her father Triton to go to the surface. When Ursula the sea witch tricks her into trading her voice for legs Ariel is forced to live away from her home in the sea forever. This films animation is incredibly beautiful, and and its songs are unmatched. Add the humor of Flounder, Sebastion, and a crazy seagull named Skuttle and you have one of the best animated films of all time. 2-Beauty and the Beast: The only animated film ever nominated for the Oscar for best picture. Beauty and the Beast is the story of a girl named Belle who is held prisoner by a horrible Beast. However the girl learns to see through the Beast's outside appearance and begins to fall in love, with the help of some enchanted furnishings. With Nominations for six academy awards and amazing songs by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, Beauty and the Beast truly deserves its spot at number two in my list. 1-The Lion King: Is what I consider the most spectacular animated film of all time. It's incredible music, written by Academy Award winners Tim Rice and Sir Elton John captivate you as you watch the film. The characters are loveable and funny, the voices for which were provided by an all star cast including Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones. The story is original and epic, as we witness a naive lion cub betrayed by a jealous uncle named Scar. Which culminates in the tragic death of simbas father, in what is one of the most emotional scenes in any animated feature. Other unforgettable characters like Timon, Pumba, and Rafiki join the story and help Simba overcome his father's loss. The Lion King is perfect in it's execution and is what I consider to be the greatest animated film of all time. |
