Hi there. You've got a pretty good list with some excellent choices. If you read my review on Ride the Lightning, its clear that I'm not the biggest fan of that album. As for Fixxxer, the closing section is simply harrowing, with Hetfield roaring "No more pins in me!". Great stuff. Concerning Bleeding Me, well what can I say? Masterful execution through and through, with no obvious flaws. In any case, I appreciate the feedback.

Not bad... (Reply to this comment)
by jimbometalfan
This list isn't too bad. I like that you added some of the Load and Reload songs like Until It Sleeps and Fuel, as a lot of reviewers would never touch those albums.
Having said that, there a some problems with your list. First off, Bleeding Me and Fixxxer? Really?
Also there are no songs from Ride The Lightning
So here it goes here is Metallica's top ten:
10. Until It Sleeps (Agree with everything you said on this one.)
9. Ride The Lightning
8. Frantic (Also agree with all on this)
7. Creeping Death
6. The Unforgiven
5. For Whom The Bell Tolls
4. The Four Horsemen
3. One
2. Sanitarium (epic song with equally epic ending)
1. Master of Puppets(Unquestionable)
You could also put 1-8 the entire Master of Puppets album, which IMO, is one of the greatest albums ever created.

You've got a really good list here. Can't argue with your choices, and "Dyer's Eve" is one hell of a song. No plans to review the albums you mentioned. I will say that if I were to update my list, I would definitely add "That Was Just Your Life" to it. Thanks again for commenting.

Thanks for the quick reply and sorry for my slower one =]. Sure, i understand what you mean. If you ask me Master of Puppets should belong in any such list just by looking at how successful and popular it has become. In case you were wondering, here's my top 10.
10) Of Wolf and Man [I agree the lyrics are just "there". Love the rhythm on this one though]
9) Fixxxer [wouldn't put it #2 but it's content earns it a place here definitely]]
8) Fuel [I really don't understand why some people don't like this]
7) Welcome Home [Just a tiny bit better than Battery i.m.o. Their best slow track.]
6) For whom the Bell Tolls [I don't know if you're into guitar and stuff but this song manages to hold with only 4 power chords and i scale(i believe its called)]
5) Hero of the Day [I fell in love with this when i heard it on S&M]
4) Bleeding Me [You've said it all]
3) One [Same]
2) Master of Puppets [Master-piece]
1) Dyers eve [I'm not all about speed when it comes to Metallica but I just can't recall how many times I've heard this. Definitely unsurpassed in terms of content and speed]
Are you planning on reviewing Death Magnetic or Kill Em All? Btw I've added you on msn but i don't think you've received anything. Add me if you'd like: leftos1991@hotmail.com

Fair point about "Master of Puppets". I enjoyed the song, but it was never one of my personal favorites. I know others might disagree. You could make a strong case for putting it in any 'top 10' list involving Metallica, and I wouldn't argue against it. Thanks for the comment.

Logical Question (Reply to this comment)
by leftosdoussis
Here's my question.
Now look I'm not one of those people who say load and reload suck and that Metallica were awesome up until the black album because i like most if not all of their work especially their newest work. I agree with most of your choices for the top ten including fuel, hero of the day and bleeding me BUT: in the begging of the review you state "These ten songs have shaped the band we all know as Metallica". Don't you think master of puppets [the song] has contributed to that in a great way? i mean you have rated it 10/10. It seems sort of contradicting information to me. AGAIN I'm not one of those people who say Metallica were good in the past only nor am i trying to prove you wrong. I'm just curious.

My rating reflects my opinion and draws attention to what I believe is a flawed and biased list - just because I disagree with you and haven't voted in accordance with a majority makes me neither "juvenile" nor "petty", but demonstrates that you can't deal with criticism. Just call a spade a spade and rename it "Top 10 Metallica - The Mid 90s Bit".

Re: No. (Reply to this comment)
by deepthroat101
As I see it, these are the ten best Metallica songs. I feel I adequately represented their earlier work ("Battery", "One", and "Dyers Eve"). They certainly made some great albums in the 80s, but Metallica never really reached their full potential until the release of Load and ReLoad. You may disagree, but that is a poor excuse for your 'Not Helpful' rating. Given that the Epinions Lead and Advisors from the music category all gave my writeup a 'Very Helpful', your rating seems petty and juvenile by comparison. I picked songs that covered three decades, with an emphasis on the 90s since that was when Metallica was at their best.

No. (Reply to this comment)
by punchbear
Can not agree with these choices, completely excluding their much earlier work and implying a 90s-centric ignorance that precludes objective appraisal of their entire catalogue.
"Hetfield screams out excellent lines to the effect of.."
To the effect of? What? That's you screaming out not having a clue. "To the effect of" normally means something entirely different to what you write and imply here Again, I question your objectivity, tenacity of opinion and the overall validity of opinion of a Metallica Best Of.

To be honest, im only 15, im from New Zealand so i guess u wouldnt expact me 2 be into this music, but i am. Anyway, i wuld just like to say that i think ur 2 top songs r probably my favourite songs at the moment. The rest of ur choices i hav absolutely loved each of them at sum stage(except for Frantic). Metallica is my favourite band to listen to while i play Halo 2 online (daedricmaster is my gamertag, add me if u got xbox live hehe) and all round i almost lyk every song of theirs except for the album St. Anger, can't stand it.

Did you factor Cliff? (Reply to this comment)
by whooza
Yo deepthroat, you wrote alot about Jason's bass playing, but you don't say too much about Cliff's. In songs like For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Call of Ktulu, Damage Inc. and Orion, there are a bunch of moments where Cliff is playing some sweet distorted lead bass solos, which many often confuse as guitar lines...did you make the same mistake, cuz thats not kirk, thats genuine cliff burton genius. I love Jason, but the volume pedal bass intro to Damage Inc. is better than anything Jason could have written. This mite raise review opinions on some songs.

Re: insane list (Reply to this comment)
by deepthroat101
Come on Bleeding me and Fixxer number 1 and 2?
Yep. Two of the most prolific songs of the 90's and without question, Metallica's best offerings.
You are a typical Metallica fan. You joined the band wagon when the Black album came out.
Let's see, The Black Album was released in 1991, so that would make me all of five years old. I somehow doubt I was thrashing to Enter Sandman in preschool.
In actuality, my experience with Metallica began with all their older, 80's material. I enjoyed it at the time, but it eventually lost it's appeal with me. Despite what any 80's Metallica fans say, Load and ReLoad are the best and the brightest of the band's long career. Thanks for the comment.

insane list (Reply to this comment)
by grinder97
Are you serious about that list? Come on Bleeding me and Fixxer number 1 and 2? Thats just crazy. You are a typical Metallica fan. You joined the band wagon when the Black album came out. You heard Enter Sandman and were a Metallica fan for years. ANY song off Master Of Puppets, Justice, Ride The Lightening, Kill 'em All is better than ANY song they wrote after the Black album. Here is a closer to reality top 10.
10. Ain't my Bittch(only song after Black worth a crap)
9. Frayed ends of Sanity
8. Jump In The Fire
7. Am I Evil ( yes they covered that song, but all you real Metallica fans knew that)
6. One( only because it was played to death)
5. Battery
4. Fade To Black
3. Blackened
2.Sanitarium
1. Master of Puppets

Top ten metallica songs (Reply to this comment)
by graphic9000
Wow!!!!!!!!!! I just cannot believe that this is your tope ten!!!!!! You have said you have listened to all material!!! I don't think you have i mean come on you have left the three greatest songs out, Fade to black, master of puppets and creeping death. Not forgetting, the four horsemen, seek and destroy, orion and SANITARIUM!!!!!!!!!!! thtat is a great song. The only song that should stay in there is ONE which is a classic!!!. Well that is my opinion but there are better songs than the ones you picked. Bleeding me is a great song but compared to the others its just a minor song. Thank Graphic9000

Forgotten Greats (Reply to this comment)
by mike23132
Wow....I can't believe that you've forgotten several songs that are more deserving of being on a top 10 Metallica songs list. Are you telling me that Frantic is a better song than Fade to Black, Orion, Master of Puppets, Trapped Under Ice, Call of Ktulu, To Live Is To Die, the list could go on and on. I will commend you on recognizing Bleeding Me, which is often overlooked, and i will tell you that some of the songs you picked are very awesome Metallica songs (Until It Sleeps, One, Dyers Eve, Battery), but there are definitely better songs. The only song that you picked that should stay in the top 10 is One. But thats just my opinion...

Change (Reply to this comment)
by kittie74
I guess I am one of those unwilling to accept change- at least when it comes to Metallica. I was a die-hard Metallica fan for years. I had every album up through the Black album. I was a bit disappointed with the Black Album, and I didn't even think about buying the others after it. I've been tempted to buy St. Anger, but I'm still madly in anger with Metallica.
This was an excellent review, but how could you leave off Fade to Black? ;P Anyway...Great job.
