ShlepGoddess, huh? I LIKE that! You've made my day, with that one!
Yes, Vasilis, Smorg is correct. One of the criteria for gaining a hat is having high quality reviewers on one's wot, although I don't know how much weight they really put on that.
Also, Vasilis, in most cases, it is necessary to ALSO have more than eight reviews written! LOL!

Diana the ShlepGoddess: They could give you a TR hat. Then, you wouldn't have any r,r,c responsibilities; you'd just have to keep writing reviews, which you do anyway.
Yikes, I really should read up on how the hats are selected now (looking frantically for new excuses).
So, no excuses!
but...but... the hat would ruin my hairdo! ;o) My cat worked hard on that thing, you know. I don't know why he'd think I really need that much grooming...
Vasilis: how is one's WoT connected to one's hat?... the logic escapes me (not that I was ever very logical, that old SuperTramp song was written about me :o)
O, I think I read somewhere that being prudence with the WoT is a criteria for selecting a hat, bro. But I could be remembering wrong... All the rules and regulations and other official things really aren't engaging reading materials. ;oP
I don't really know how it should effect one's ...authority weight? myself. I've read some folks actually would delete you from their WoT if you don't write a review for a few months... some add you more for your rating and commenting than for your reviews (I'd think that's a lot more labor intensive keeping track of those things)...
I just basically add folks whose reviews are usually helpful to consumers (with very few exceptions of a few who've been really nasty in comment sections). Many ways to skin a cat, I guess.... I only wrote that last part because my cat is now in another room.. ;o)
As to how to keep pace with R/R/C, any hat wannabe write me, I'll tell.
Oy! Now you'll really get swamped with emails!! ;o)
Thanks again for dropping by, guys. Hope spring is being beautiful your way (it is beautiful here... all the flowers are blooming... making me very thankful for the modern anti-histamines!).
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

They could give you a TR hat. Then, you wouldn't have any r,r,c responsibilities; you'd just have to keep writing reviews, which you do anyway.
Also, I have seen some hatted folks who keep large wot's.

Thanks, matie. :o)
O, I'm paying it forward, really. There were a few folks that were very encouraging to me when I started out, too. So I'm paying back that way. Epinions is really full of cool folks who can really write, too!
The only thing I don't understand is why you haven't been given a Music hat yet.
Oy, I'm really not taking up one, matie. Haven't got the time to do that post justice. I'm 2 days behind on the notifiers as it is. :oP Dunno how the hats keep up r/r/c and still write great reviews of their own. I'd just die of over-exertion.
Anyhow, I think my WoT is probably too large for a hat anyhow. I'm adding folks based on 'consistently helpful' reviews and not paying much attention on other things... I even add inactive members if I like their reviews. ;oP
Thanks very much for your vote of confidence, though. That means more than a hat! :o) My head is now too big for one for it.
Thanks for stopping by and hope your week is going great, Diana!

Hey Smorg,
I agree with rkingfish's acronym. You always do a fine job with your reviews.
You manage to produce so many high quality reviews, and are always encouraging to others, in your comments.
The only thing I don't understand is why you haven't been given a Music hat yet.
Certainly hope to see a hat on your head with the next round.

Vasilis: you don't like something, your produce an enjoyable read. Smorgmeister indeed.
I see you enjoy rage arias, too! ;oP
Honestly, mate... I might consent to having another look at this infernal thing for a dinner date with Vesselina... But only if she's paying. ;o)
Despite the fact that the opera was poorly staged, I always envy those guys like Aeneas who got to couple with Venus.
Ooooh! Good point, George! I bet Venus is more personable than Elettra, too. Though the Venus in this production looks something like a giant red-tinged kalamari... ;oP

Hey Rick, T, Mike, & Marcy!! (Reply to this comment)
by smorg
Thanks for stopping by!!
Marcy: I looked at the photos and it looks more like porn than an opera. But why did you hold back? Why didn't you tell us how you really felt? (just joking.)
Hey, I was actually holding back, amica. It was a torture... kept trying to shout at the monitor as I was remembering things from this sorry excuse of a Mozart opera DVD. ;o)
No worries about Alba/Elba, matie. Elba, Napoleon's place of exile, was the first thing that came to mind when I first heard of the opera, too. Thanks for the cool link about the place. I hadn't known that before. Gotta visit Italy next year!! :o)
On the other hand, it was really strangely neat to have an all out negative review indeed... a bit like exorcism. ;oP Now if I can just get those infernal bunch of singing turnips off my head!
It was an enjoyable review and written with gusto. You always give me a chuckle.
Grazie, amica! That makes my day there!
Mike: Here's a case where my erstwhile tendency merely to listen to CDs (or even DVDs) rather than viewing the opera might have seemed advantageous. However, I'd still be stuck with all that irritating speechifying.
Maybe so, Mikey. But the singing here isn't all that good either (with 2 exceptions). I don't dislike Singspiel (German opera with spoken dialog between arias... like Webber's Oberon or Mozart's The Magic Flute) in general. But this thing really has such pretentious and unimaginative dialog that it really is irritating. And instead of having the singers do the talking, they have the 2 actors do them while the singers convulse in place.
your review was nonpareil, Smorgmeister.
That's a good thing, Mike. There's already enough venom spewed in that thing, I'm afraid. It's just that Mozart is my favorite guy and this thing is so criminally bad.
"A little bird" told me precisely which avian chum you envisioned atop David.
Ha! You Midwesterners have good memory! :o)
Well, you know how it goes, mate... Big swallow, big... 8oP
T: Gramophone gave this staging a scathing slam in last month's issue --- Really, these Regies have no respect for anyone or anything anymore. How to put a stop to such travesties?
Darn, I shoulda read Grammophon more then. Hadn't seen that review... mighta saved me some bouts of insanity.... Hey, now that's a travesty! I actually agree with the prof critic on an opera!!
(BTW, if this is worse than hearing Barney sing that silly song again, it must really be an abysmal experience!)
It is a torture, matie. I was positively bawling into the monitor for Damrau not to leave everytime she's done with her arias. The rest of it is just so anal!!!
Diana Damrau's caught my attention, too. Wonder if I'll be able to hear her in next season's Met - she'll be singing Pamina, Queen of the Night and 'Die Entfuhrung''s Konstanze. Good chance that I will
I hope you do soon, T. Damrau has been announcing her retirement from Queen of the Night for some months now. First in Munich, and the Met... I think she's taking up Pamina instead because she doesn't feel that the high F's she has to sing as The Queen aren't secure anymore.
She was to sing Pamina for the entire run, but the soprano scheduled for the Queen had to bowl off 2 shows, so they asked Damrau to step in on those nights. I don't think I've ever heard of any singer singing both Queen and Pamina in the same run before. Hope you get to hear her in both roles! :o)

It's 5 am in the east, as I sit here munching on a pile of Figaro Newtons, contemplating a review of my favorite opera.

You know what they say, into each life a little rain must fall. If all your reviews were positive then you wouldn't be a balanced reviewer. I liked your vegetable analogy. I'm sorry you had to endure such tripe but at least you liked the female lead so it wasn't a total loss or waste of your time.

my erstwhile tendency merely to listen to CDs (or even DVDs) rather than viewing the opera might have seemed advantageous. However, I'd still be stuck with all that irritating speechifying.
Indeed, replacing the original (Italian) recitatives with (German) speech is going a step in the very opposite direction from where "opera" was initially pointed when it was ostensibly "invented" (Italy, c.1600). I personally disdain such "spoken dialogue" in virtually all operas; not only can't I understand the lingo, but also (contrasted with semi-sung recitative) it's utterly unmusical. [Admittedly, I might feel better about it were I the polyglot you--not to mention T.--are.]
Oh, btw, your review was nonpareil, Smorgmeister. ;-)

Hah, Gramophone gave this staging a scathing slam in last month's issue, saying it seemed like a work by an entirely different composer, and that Mozart's music was just incidental to the goings-on. The replacement of the original recitatives by ridiculous German-language speech was panned as well. Good thing, indeed, that Mozart isn't around to suffer this insult, eh? Or maybe he's spinning in his grave yet again, with these atrocious Salzburg stagings. Really, these Regies have no respect for anyone or anything anymore. How to put a stop to such travesties?
(BTW, if this is worse than hearing Barney sing that silly song again, it must really be an abysmal experience!)
Shan't be viewing this one anytime soon. Thanks for the warning.
Merci bien, smorgy!
