| Bornio's Full Review: Unreal Tournament for Windows |
if you're looking for a good fps with plenty of gameplay aspects, plenty of weapons, and even cool mods, get unreal. unreal is best for multiplayer though single player is still pretty good. the ai is not bad and the single player missions can last a long while. Unreal has lots of customizability with scenarios, weapons, gravity, and more. there's not only frag fests in unreal, there's capture the flag, last man standing, assault (one of my favorites), plus a couple others. in assault, one team has an alotted time to take over or destroy a target defended by the other team.
weapons::
you've got a minigun, chainsaw, pulse gun, handgun (you can hold 2 at once), rocket launcher, flak cannon, bio gun, translocator, sniper rifle, shock rifle, and this huge thing called a redeemer. all of these weapons except for 2 have a second function. the rocket launcher can launch multiple rockets. all these functions add more aspects and give you more control over your ability to frag. compare this to quake 3. in Q3, you have a chain gun, a shotgun, a plasma gun, a single-rocket launcher, the rail gun, a lightening gun, and the bfg (am i missing a sniper rifle?). many of these work similarly. and none have multiple functions. the plasma and lightening gun are combined to make the pulse gun in unreal. the bfg is just a more powerful version. all considered, quake has fewer guns and less dynamic weaponry. it gets pretty boring playing with quake weapons because they're all so similar. in unreal, none of the guns are similar and all require a little different skill to use. unreal also gives you a few more options with some of the weapons in the game-setup menu.
level design/graphics::
the levels in unreal are numerous and unique. they can be very large to very small. they range from outside forts and cliffs to indoor castles and spaceships. the graphics are generally lighter than those in quake 3, enabling you to see better. in quake 3, many of the levels are very similar and variety is low. the graphics do tend to look a bit better in quake 3, but there isn't much of a noticeable difference.
pace::
the pace in unreal is fast, but the movement is a bit slower than quake 3. that's a good thing. the movement in q3 is too artificial. but you still have to keep moving to survive in unreal.
mods::
unreal has another advantage over it's competitors. it has a mod called tac-ops. it's basically like the counter-strike mod for half-life. it's a free download and a fun addition to unreal. tac-ops gives you real guns and more realistic hit points so that you can die from a few shots from a rifle. weapons provided include the desert eagle, mac-10, mp5, colt m4, steyr-aug, ak47, benelli shotgun, a few sniper rifles, another hk rifle, and grenades. recoil and inaccuracies are provided as are semi-realistic sounds. tac-ops can be played in single player missions or multiplayer. in the single-player tac-ops melee, however, the ai is not so great. still, it's fun using the more realistic weapons as the inaccuracies provide for longer and louder gunfights.
unreal blows quake 3 out of the water with its gameplay and variety. unreal is simply a more complete game that offers you more for your money than quake 3. you can play unreal for days without getting bored.
