Dr. Dev's Top 10 Movies of the 90s
Sep 11 '03 (Updated Jul 15 '05)
The Bottom Line The bottom line liked none of these movies..
What was I thinking when I set off to do this list? Decades are so much harder to nail down than individual years. This was extremely tough and took forever..and I'll probably never be satisfied with it. Ish.
Many of you may disagree vehemently with a few of these, but such is the way of the world where these lists are concerned. Bring it. heh. My list, as always, is how much I was entertained.. not neccessarily how good the acting was.
Army of Darkness (1993) ~ Third and last in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. The basic jist is that Ash must now recover the book in order to get back to his own time period...and to save the kingdom. He is warned that he must recite exactly three words before he grabs the book... He forgets the words and sets off the raising of the Army of Darkness, which is an obvious tribute to Ray Harryhausen. The skeletons are fantastic!
The Fisher King (1991) ~ This is one of those movies I can just watch over and over. It is a beautiful story of madness and ego defense mechanisms and learning to be human. Everything is just interwoven so damn beautifully. I'll go so far as to say it's psychological masterpiece. The twists are sometimes pretty apparent... but not always. Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.
Mars Attacks! (1996) ~ It's about Martians coming to Earth, and us getting it all wrong. Shocking, I know. Everybody and their brother has an opinion on the meeting, and tons of folks show up to greet the visitors the first landing. Doves are released to signify peace. The doves are promptly killed, along with quite a few humans. Opps! Why, they didn't mean anything by that at all! We simply didn't understand their culture. Then things get worse... Simply Hilarious with an all-star cast.
Girl, Interrupted (1999) ~ Inside look at a mental institution through the eyes of the girls 'doing time' there. Very intense movie, and the parts are realistically portrayed by Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Brittany Murphy, Elisabeth Moss, and Clea DuVall. Whoopi Goldberg as a nurse just adds class to the whole thing.
First Knight (1995) ~ The tale claims to be of Camelot and King Arthur, of Lancelot and Guinevere..and yes, the characters are named that, but that's pretty much as close as it gets, unless you count that big ol' round table. You will not find Merlin here, or Morgain... or any of the rest. What you will find is a tale of a young Lady betrothed to a King Arthur who is twice her age, yet very virile still. You will find a young, brave Lancelot, who falls in love with the soon-to-be Queen....then later falls in love with the idea of Camelot too. Therein lies the rub. Stars Sean Connery, Richard Gere, and Julia Ormond.
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) ~ A character study type of movie. It's about a real estate sales office and the trials and tribulations which accompany any lead-driven sales job. Star studded with Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Jonathan Pryce, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Exceptionally tight script and acting.
Twelve Monkeys (1995) ~ The Future Is History. Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, Madeleine Stowe, and Christopher Plummer in this wild tale about a criminal send back in time to stop a devestating plague.. only problem is he goes a bit too far back and ends up in a looney bin. Excellent directing by Terry Gilliam.
Meet Joe Black (1998) ~ What you have here is a story about DEATH. Not about dying per se, but about DEATH himself. Ya see, DEATH wants to know what it means to experience life. He's supposed to be claiming a corporate big wig, but decides to make a deal instead. If Bill will show DEATH the ropes to living, then DEATH will allow Bill to live a bit longer.
Office Space (1999) ~ The first time I saw this one I thought it was cute. The second time I was laughing outloud. The third I was in stitches. It just grows on you! Now it's one of my favorite comedies. It's about an office, and kind of parodies the cubical life. It's over the top, but that just makes it more fun! I deal with the goddamn customers so the engineers don't have to! I have people skills! I am good at dealing with people! Can't you understand that?! What the hell is wrong with you people?!
Being John Malkovich (1999) ~ An original story, (which doesn't happen often) from Charlie Kaufman. When a secret door is discovered, it leads to John Malkovich's head. I mean like inside it, as in you are him... or watching everything he does rather. Warped! I love this movie! Also has John Cusack and Cameron Diaz.
