The Bottom Line: Four Stars!! The 2004 BMW was Consumer Reports checkrated. 2005 and 2006 model owners' surveys have found a statistical drop in reliability and the 2007 model vehicle is not recommended.

We purchased a 2004 BMW X3 very recently for $5K back of book. It has 3.0 L engine,automatic,leather interior, heated seats, privacy glass, garage door opener mirror option and wind deflectors on the windows option. The car meets every expectation for quality and finish we have challenged it with. The ride is BMW taut and sporty, the interior materials are rugged and well-fitting, and the drivetrain is flawless and responsive. Mileage has met the EPA ratings. Warranty service is excellent and no questions asked, free loaner too. The panoramic sunroof makes the interior more airy. The BMW business stereo system with the two subwoofers provides excellent, distortion free sound. Controls are well-adjustable and the memory seating/mirrors simple to use and adjust. LIghting controls and options are broad and simple to set up. The undercarriage has a decent steel skidplate, not the plastic pan you find on the GMC Envoy! Our only regret is missing the Bluetooth upgrade by four more months in the manufacturing date. The German engineering is state-of-the-art and built to last. This is our first German car, our first BMW, and we are impressed. The tool kit in the back is a nice touch also and the quality is there. The folks who designed and built this vehicle strike us as being focused on their work, and proud of it.
