Pros: Makes you feel like a pirate! Spices up drinks, good sipping too.
Cons: You better like cinnamon!
The Bottom Line: If you like cinnamon, or just a good rum at a low price, go sailing on Captain Morgan's ship. Yo ho ho!

Captain Morgan is to rum as Joe Muggs is to coffee. Not only do both Joe and the Cap'n go on cute little adventures in the name of their respective beverage, but they both signify great taste.
Rum started out as a drink for sailors and peasants. It was really harsh, and anyone who could afford better were considered fortunate. Rum has come a long way, and is now considered one of the most mixable spirits, second only to gin.
Captain Morgan comes in four flavors: Original Spiced, Silver Spiced, Private Stock, and Parrot Bay (coconut).
Captain Morgan Spiced Rum is a dark rum laced with cinnamon and cloves. It is made from sugar cane which is made into molasses, and then fermented and distilled.
The smell is nice and full of cinnamon with a hint of vanilla. I like to take a shot glass, pour a shot of the drink into it, drink it, and let the glass sit out overnight without washing it. The next day it smells absolutely wonderful. I wonder if I can get an air freshener for my car in that scent...
The taste of cinnamon is the dominant tone on the tongue, with alcohol and cloves also present. It has a nice bite. The warming is very nice. It can keep you nice and toasty on a cold winter's eve.
Captain's is 70 proof, so it's a bit lighter on the alcohol percentage side, but don't let that fool you. Jack Daniels is higher proof, but I can drink a fifth of that stuff and not know the difference, apart from a relaxed feeling - no buzz. Captain Morgan has more effect.
Captain Morgan Silver Spiced Rum is like the original, except it's light rum of course. I haven't tasted it yet, so maybe I'll write about it some other time. It costs about a dollar or two more than Original, and is also 70p.
Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay is a coconut rum, and a really good one at that. Why, for breakfast this morning I made two pitchers of pina coladas by pouring in some Parrot Bay and some unsweetened pineapple juice and filling the pitcher with ice. Not quite as good as with good ol' coconut cream, but it worked nicely. Parrot Bay is a good mixer for fruit drinks. It costs about the same as Captain's Silver, and the alcohol content is around that of a liqueur, with a proof around the 40s, if memory serves me.
Captain Morgan Private Stock is the best. It's like Original, but awoken. It really brings out the spices and vanilla, and is 80 proof for those of you who are ashamed to drink anything less. It's not too pricey either, just a few dollars more than Original, which by no means is expensive (in my area).
Captain Morgan is a favorite among quite a few of my friends, some consider it their very favorite spirit. I have to say the Captain's Private Stock is number one in my private stash. I don't even keep any in my guest bar - nobody's getting any of this stuff away from me! I recommend this one highly.
So if you can find it, go for the Private Stock. Original is cheap, and really nice. The silver is probably comparable, and only slightly more expensive. The Parrot Bay is my least favorite, but you should get it if you love coconut or just want to mix it with fruity stuff.
Best part, Captain Morgan is a hundred times better than Bacardi's rubbish, as far as straight drinking goes.
