The Bottom Line This is the actual first chapter of my story and will get more into the story.
The mining city of Gild wasn't much of a city at all. It was more of a jail for slaves who wouldn't buckle under the new order. This could be seen a.by the number of humans who worked the mines b.all the armed guards standing around and getting paid for it, and c.The humans were by no means well dressed or happy. A pitty, really, I understand that in the Vordian language Gild means 'New Beginning'. An ironic joke I suppose. My name is Samuel Karr, Sammy to my friends...the few I have were chosen for me, seeing as we work the mines together. Thats the way things are, if you think I sound bitter, well, I'm not, I'm past that about 2 years. Now I'm complacent, more than happy to not cause more trouble than it's worth. When I was in my teens I had tried to escape my home, and my masters. They were by no means bad, but they were my masters, and me their servant. I wanted freedom, and it nearly cost my life. I was shot three times in the attempt, once in the arm, once in the leg, and once in the side of my stomach. The aliens, for everything you can say bad about them, put me in a regen-tank to heal me up, and then they put me to work here. You see, back when I was on servant status I was fed well, and life was more ordinary than anything, but as any young servant boy I had heard the rumours of brave rebellions. Some had grown more famous with time. The Historians were by far the most famous. They searched the history of our land for an answer to the Vordian. Many looked to them as kooks living in the mountains, while others thought of them, although eccentric, as dreamers who at the very least brought hope through their stories of daring. Although few believed that this was an answer to the problems plaguing our race, they were well loved by almost all of the colonies. I always found them a bit weird. Next was The Savages. This wasn't one collection, but a number of small groups who staked out what was left of the woods in the area. Although they were the weakest in terms of resources, and power, these groups seemed to offer the biggest hope for freedom. 'For that', many said, 'they would be willing to die the next day for the few hours they spent with it.' Understandable, but my want to run away was not to die young. The group that always met my fancy was the Redeemers. The Redeemers were well founded in the new history as the first to attack the Vordians directly. It seems the group was originally founded within Vordian society, and that the famous Redeemer gambit would never have worked if it wasn't for their spies within Vordian Hierarchy. The gambit was an attack on a weapons installation the Vordians owned at the beginning of the war. The Redeemers attacked this nearly impregnible fortress apparently from the inside. They took it over and made it their base of operations. The base contained a number of batteries, and anti-air weapon arrays, making it a choice spot to laugh at the Vordians from. Taking the fortress was a well founded idea, the vordians had alot of trouble trying to take it back, and it didn't help that the rumours of troops on the inside of the Vordian forces seemed to be founded when the Redeemers would attack every advance no matter how well hidden. That was the group that got me to run away. Somewhere in my mind I got an idea that I would run away from my not-so-tough masters, and make it to the Redeemer hideout unscathed. Because I hated my masters secretly. I knew that they weren't the worst; I knew about servants who got whipped every day, and worse. It was their outlook that got me, their view of the world was that everyone was in their place. I didn't like being in my place. I wasn't the only one who had tried to run. Specifically everyone in this town had rebelled in some way, and running away was considered a 'minor' offense. we were allowed to work outer mines and collect different resources for the Vordians. We were trusted enough to use heavy mining gear, gear that could make out to work as weaponry if we wanted to make an escape attempt. Good thing none of us were crazy, we would probably die to the first gun installation. Their were crazies. Like Gunther Vandt down in the kitchens. Everyone felt for the big guy a little, loaded to bear with dampener equipment to make him slower, weaker, and dumber than he normally would be, he was now on kitchen duty well watched by guards because despite all the dampeners he just never seemed to stop trying. Some say he was beaten badly by his original masters, possibly assaulted sexually. In my group their were three. Elizabeth, Darek, and Mandell. This didn't include me of course. Elly was one of my best friends. Although she seemed like she was the weakest of our group she was very intelligent. Taught me to read, and write, and is a devout fan of mythology, and the Historians. Elly, which is short for Elizabeth, only attempted escape when her elderly masters died. According to her they were the ones who taught her to read and write, and although they didn't believe in slavery, they were old and didn't wish to fight it directly. Elly was different and wished to leave many times. Although they would have let her she chose to stay and watch after them because she loved them almost as close as she may have loved her parents if she ever met them. Their death was slow, they died to an old Vordian disease that ate at the immune system. They told Elly to go but she didn't leave till they were actually dead. The officer in charge caught her leaving and tried to blame the deaths of her masters on her. She was severely whipped to an inch of her life before the medical examiner found the cause of their death. For her apparent escape, but most likely because she was unwanted, they sent her here. The officer in charge was now working in Gild, but thankfully in a different region. Darek was quiet. No one knew alot about him. Me and Elly probably knew the most, and that was small. He was a tall one, about 6'7 at last measuring, with long black hair, and a tan complexion. Elly often joked at him being a 'tall dark mysterious stranger' but no one ever seemed to get it. Something in a book most likely. Finally their was Mandell. Despite his hard life, Mandell always had a smile beaming on his face. He had a certain light to his eyes which made him look constantly excited. Mandell was like a pillar of energy, when he was around you couldn't help but become intoxicated by his attitude. Mandell was another mystery. No one knew why he was sent here, who is old masters were, or anything about him. He was old, about 50, not too old to work but the lines were starting to work over him. These were my friends, thankfully. I had no enemies among my group and none of the group did towards others either. We were even well liked in the village by the other 'workers'. Mandell telling stories every night to the younger workers started becoming the popular entertainment around dinner time. If someone wanted to know how to read, or general knowledge, they went to Elly for her secret library. Darek seemed to watch all their backs, having just...been there a number of times. Even I seemed to have developed a leadership type role. When people needed advice they always seemed to want to ask me. Thus it came known who ran things in the village, and it wasn't really the villagers. If someone wanted to start a rebellion we could tomorrow, and maybe win. Like I said, we werent crazy, the area was well fortified, and they were the ones with the real weaponry. As such, we had just started are day in the mines. I didn't know this but things were about to get wierd. Who would have known what would have awaited us just a few more strikes in. Kind of amazing when I think about it now, with most of my friends still around me. We're still in the city of Gild, but now we may have to be crazy. We got ready, and started at a pretty good pace, because the jerk slave runner was coming up for an inspection. This runner was named Kaldus. Kaldus was a human, not alien...yet he willingly worked as a runner because it gave him a one-up over everyone else. I think he hated everyone, even the aliens around him, which may be what gave him such a pike up there where the sun doesn't shine so brightly. We were well into are work when he showed up. He started hitting Elly. I almost did something, I almost stopped digging...but that would have been suicide for both of us. She was crying now, and he swung again, I swung harder at the wall. She cried harder, but I just bit my lip...damn, I could have killed him there...I think maybe I should have killed him there, but I kept up on the wall...harder...harder. That is when it happened...I hit something hard. It wasn't stone, I know that. It was wierd, maybe not of this world, and lit out. As soon as it was uncovered the whole cave shook, their was a lot of light Couldn't see anything. When I asked later it was like that everywhere, and then I felt it, everyone did. The pain then the surge...it was like everylimb of my body fell asleep, and then REALLY woke up again...lasted awhile too, when I looked up...everything was different... |
