The Best Anime Ever Part 2: Reach Anime Nirvana With These PicksSep 29 '03 (Updated Sep 06 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line This is Part 2 of My List of the Best Anime Ever. Please Be Sure To Check Out Part 1 For Even More Anime Madness. There are still a lot of people in this world that do not have any idea of what anime is. You can't blame them though, I mean very little of it actually ends up hitting the mainstream. Although anime is animation, it tends to be much more complex than your standard American cartoon series and Disney's animated films. Because of the complexity, most people tend to dislike anime. There are several different kinds of anime that spans across all genres, and so this allows for much diversity amongst the hundreds of series and this pretty much guarantees something for everyone through this unique medium of animation. I haven't exactly been a long running fan of anime, as I started really getting into it at the beginning of last summer, but I know a thing or two about it. So here is part 2 of the list of my favorite anime; I wrote the first list a week or two ago, and I thought that you cannot do the medium justice mentioning just 10 titles. So here it is; Part 2 of my list. Feel free to check out the first list at the link below: The Best Anime Ever: My Divine Picks and Favorites With that said it's now time to delve into the world of anime. ¥ 10 More of the Best in Anime ¥ #10. - Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin OAV Series Type: OAV Series / Action Full Review Coming Soon I'm one of the biggest suckers for Rurouni Kenshin around, and so I found it fit to include this as an entry in the list. I myself consider these OAVs to be separate from Rurouni Kenshin, and so this is why I included them separately from Rurouni Kenshin, which was on my last list. The series of OAVs follows the early life of Kenshin, and allows us to see Kenshin as the merciless killer he was in the days when he held the title of the Hitokiri Battousai. The OAV series is much darker than most fans of the anime series on tv would naturally expect, but this just adds to the beauty of it all. Keep in mind though, this is only for people who are already fans of Rurouni Kenshin. #9. - Lupin III Type: Series / Action Comedy Full Review of Lupin III During the summertime, I noticed a show called Lupin III, or Lupin the 3rd as it is often spelled out. It took me a while to finally gain respect for it, but after repeated viewings I became a big fan. Lupin the 3rd is definitely one of the stranger series that I watch. It's a bit hard to explain, but just picture a perverted James Bond turned thief living in the 1970s. Lupin has skill to match his sideburns, as he's one of Japan's greatest thiefs following in the footsteps of his grandfather. Lupin III is a bit hard to swallow at first, but once you finally get into it you'll be hooked. #8. - Love Hina Type: Series / Romantic Comedy Full Review Coming Soon Love Hina is one of those series that you're actually a little bit embarrassed to admit to liking, but it's all good. I was actually recommended this series to watch by a friend, and so I figured why not. It's actually a very funny and light hearted series. The series follows a boy named Keiitaro who made a promise to go to college with a childhood sweetheart, but things never work out how you plan them. Love Hina is a very funny series that works well with what it does. I recommend this anime to all of those who aren't completely sold on anime, or who are interested in the medium. #7. - FLCL Type: Series / Sci-Fi (I guess) Full Review Coming Soon Every once in a while someone comes up with something completely original and different. FLCL is one of these products of uniqueness. It is seriously the strangest anime series I have ever had the privelidge of watching. It's one of those love or hate series as there really is no compromise between the two extremities of opinion. The story follows a 12 year old boy named Naota. He is fairly normal, and has a brother that moved away to play baseball. Things go weird for him once a girl who claims to be from another planet shows up and bonks him on the head with her crazy guitar. It may not seem that strange, but when robots start coming out of Naota's head, people begin to talk. FLCL is incredibly whacky, I really don't know who to recommend it to. #6. - Neon Genesis Evangelion Type: Series / Sci-Fi Full Review Coming Soon We have now gotten down to the most overrated anime series on my list, but that's not to say that it doesn't belong on here because it does. Most people will argue that Neon Genesis Evangelion deserves the top spot, but I disagree I'm not sure why though. The idea behind the series may not sound too original; the world being attacked by aliens and a bunch of teenagers battling against them in giant robots. The idea behind it doesn't even sound very interesting, but the plot expands and features some of my favorite characters ever. Evangelion is one of the most widely enjoyed series ever, and even though I think it's overrated I still recommend checking it out. #5. - Ninja Scroll 1995 Type: Movie / Action Full Review Coming Soon Before I even got into anime I read a ton of things about three anime movies in particular; Princess Mononoke, Akira, and Ninja Scroll. I saw the first two right away, but I had already spent all my money so I just rented Ninja Scroll. I was pleasantly surprised, I mean even though I expected it to be the worst of the three (and it is), I was still surprised at how nicely it turned out. As you may expect, the movie stars a mercenary/samurai/ninja type guy named Jubei. His quest unfolds as he learns of a conspiracy developing which involves eight devils. Great action, but a little too much violence and gore for people who aren't used to anime. #4. - Cowboy Bebop Type: Series / Action Full Review Coming Soon Cowboy Bebop is one of those series with which the fans seem to be more vocal about than with other series. Of course, I absolutely love it and think that Spike is one of the coolest main characters to ever grace an anime series. Spike Spiegel works as a bounty hunter in the galaxy, but the problem is that he has a hard time earning any money because destruction seems to follow him wherever he works. What's interesting with this series is the music; which consists mainly of jazz and the like. This is much different than in other anime series, and it's actually fairly refreshing. Cowboy Bebop is good for anime fans who have already gotten past their DBZ and Pokemon faze. #3. - Fushigi Yugi Type: Series / Drama Full Review Coming Soon Fushigi Yugi is one of those series that you can't quite make up your mind about until you stop watching. The box sets for this series are exceedingly expensive, but I guess I would say that it was worth it. The series follows a girl named Miaka and her friend Yui, as both are transported to a new world after opening a book in a dark library. Miaka soon learns that she is the fabled priest of Suzaku, and she must find the Suzaku seven in order to make all of her dreams come true. This series was especially mentally engaging for me and I just couldn't stop watching at all. The comedic aspects to it really add to the plot. The series can be enjoyed by most people, just make sure that you know what you're getting into before purchasing any of the box sets, as this is quite an investment to make. #2. - Akira 1988 Type: Movie / Sci-Fi Full Review Coming Soon Akira is one of the few anime movies that has hit mainstream and that most movie viewers should be able to recognize by name even though they probably haven't seen it. The movie really is a solid Sci-Fi movie. The movie takes place after world war III, with Neo Tokyo and futuristic biker gangs. One of the members of a biker gang, Tetsuo is captured by the military after a fight. Tetsuo becomes an experimental lab rat for the military, thus turning his world upside down. Akira is definitely a movie that a lot of people wouldn't understand enough to enjoy, despite it being one of the select few mainstream anime titles. Despite my hatred for mainstream, I love Akira, plain and simple. It's one of the best examples of terrific anime that you will find. #1. - The Slayers Type: Series / Action Comedy Full Review Coming Soon For this list, I had to give Slayers the top spot. Is it because I used up all the other good movies in the first list, or is it because I think Slayers is the very best? It's mainly because of the first reason. The series follows the exploits of a young girl named Leena Inverse. Of course she isn't the only star; Leena meets several other adventurers along the way. Looks can be deceiving, as Leena appears to be an innocent teenage girl on the outside, but she is really a powerful sorceress who hunts for treasure in her spare time. She also works for money slaying monsters and the like, but whenever she uses her dragon slave spell everything is left in rubble. The Slayers is one of the funniest series I have ever seen. Not only is it hilarious, but the series is very solid as far as action and adventure go. I recommend the Slayers to everyone. Well that's the end of this list, if you haven't already checked out my first list, I'll give you the link once more: The Fifty Greatest In Anime The Best Anime Ever: My Divine Picks and Favorites See Ya Space Cowboy... |
