I purchased in Dec 2004, so I got a good deal on one of the remaining 2004 models. The model I purchased was a 2004 Pearl White (premium color) XLS. It has dual a/c, sunroof, leather, heated seats, climate control, wood grain trim and steering wheel, memory seats, cruise. Electonic displays like how many miles you have left in your tank are useful when you are low on gas.
The 2005 Avalons had more of a stylish look, and added horsepower, and were not discounted much, so I opted not to get it. The more I look at the new Avalon, the more it looks like a bigger Camry to me. I'm glad I didn't spend more for the 2005 model, because of the perceived or actual transmission problems. While the 2004's styling might seem a bit odd to some, it never gets old. I still get a lot of complements on my car.
Reliablity has been great. Nothing has gone wrong with it so far, and I about 34,000 miles on it. Acceleration is never a problem when merging onto the expressway, or passing trucks on a 2-lane highway.
I feel more secure in this car than in any I have ever owned. The stereo system produces a high quality sound. I owned a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina previously, which was pretty reliable, but at least a step down in every category.
