MajaFiggaz Top 20 Hip-Hop Songs of The Month Vol. I(Sept 2003)

Sep 30 '03

The Bottom Line Check these out they are tight

This is the inaugural issue of my top 20 songs of the month reviews in which i'll be doing from here on out.

Looking at this list you will notice that the top songs are dominated by MF Doom and Bubba Sparxxx, which is fitting because they are the only two I gave 5 stars for thier albums this month. Da Band also has a few track in there. That may surprise a few people but they fit my "commercial fix" for the month. Sheek, Obie Trice and surprisingly Bow Wow also drop in with a dope track each, two in Sheek's case. Now before you guys slit my damn throat i Have Not yet listened to Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Blow, Atmosphere's Seven Travels or Aesop Rock's Bazooka Tooth, and I am sure they would have made an appearance here with more than one song if I had. Im my future editions I will possibly add songs I've heard on mixtapes and stuff like that but for the first issue I will stick to songs In albums I've reviewed. So Sit back get yourself a drink and read on.

20. Sheek - I Aint Forget(from Walk Witt Me) - Kicking off the countdown is Sheek Louch with I aint Forget. This song starts with a pretty slow beat. On this track Sheek sums up the situation of him, D-Block, Ruff Ryders and the Lox in the past few years. In my opinion this is when Louch is at his best, not when he is spitting punchlines. He tells about, how he wasn't with all the Shiny suit type of sh!t back when they was with Bad Boy. How he was at home when they joined up with Ruff Ryders. He talks about Jadakiss's album and how the hood thought it was moist and he tells how Styles P's promotion was weak. He tells how he never had solo plans until he dropped a freestyle. He also shouts out all the mixtape DJ's who helped him out. Tight sh!t from Louch.

19. MF Doom - Open Mic Nite pt. 2(feat. Lord Sear, AJ Ready Wright & Creature)(from Vaudeville Villain) - This starts off with a 2LiveCrew-ish beat for the first rap by AJ Ready Wright which he raps about smoking weed before he gets his mic cut off. Creature follows suit and just gets ugly on the track. The beat is tight. Creature spits some witty lyrics on violence and what will happen to you if you are messing with him. After Creature is Vik and the beat is just ridiculously tight. The beat is dark with some nice bass and ghostly "woooo"s in the background. Vik then pulls out a gun during his bid and opens fire. Good song

18. Da Band - Go Steady(from Too Hot for TV) - On This song Sara shows why givin the exposure she can be an absolute force in the world of R&B in the future. She has perfect control of her pitch levels and commands this song like a general. After listening to this anyone who thinks she is out of place because she write country songs, you will take the opinion and throw it in the trash immediately. After some phenomenal singing E-Ness comes up on the track and spits some pretty sentimental lyrics here about not cheating and staying true to his love. This is in many peoples minds the best song on Too Hot for TV.

17. Bubba Sparxxx- Jimmy Mathis(from Deliverance) - This song was the first real song on Deliverance and it set the pace for the rest of the album. This beat is tight. Timbo flips the instruments of a back-country, hoe-down into a raucous hip-hop banger. This song is heavy on harmonica's that'll make you slap ya knee's and with bass booming in at the end of bars. This song could be a club banger, but it isn't one of those club songs that is only good for a nice chorus and to get booties shaking. Bubba Sparxxx sets fire to this track while drinking his Bud-Light beer. He is pretty much spitting from the perspective of Jimmy Mathis and he tells of country life. Bubba spits some tight punchlines through-out the song, but it isn't a one dimensional type of approach of someone like, Cassidy, or Jae Hood. This was the first of many great songs on Deliverance.
"They watch me in the country, like the race on Sunday."

16. Da Band - Do You Know(from Too Hot for TV) - This track is produced by Wyclef and it is a banger. Everyone from Da Band shines here. Each rapper reps where they from going back and forth and the flow is just perfect. Babs reps her set tellin how people dress, and Ness does the same about Philly. Young City rips this track up crazy. Then the mood turns to more gangsta lyrics. Fred tells how he just tryin to let his kids eat. Sara drops a superb chorus. In the second verse the rappers spit about their lives in the hood. After another chorus Dylan jumps on this track and tears it up. After him Babs, Young City, Fred & Ness spit proving people wrong. Here ness drops a sickenin verse about him and his jailmates raising up, rioting and and getting out of the penitentiary.
"Dudes get cut in the yard, We rushin the guards/
We takin over its a riot gun-buttin the sarge/
All of my homies with wheels waitin to for em to peel/
Its always real we peel penitentiary steel
"

15. Obie Trice - Don't Come Down(from Cheers) - This is Obie's only showing on this list. The violins on this beat are tight and Obie Trice spits some killer lyrics here. The chipmunk on this song is mad annoying however. He should have just chalked it up and gave the chipmunk sample to The Diplomats, they wouldv'e equally matched the chipmunk in terrible vocals, as they usually do. Obie Trice spits some heartfelt intospective lyrics here about when he was younger and his dysfunctional family. This is Obie Trice at his finest and this was the best song on Cheers. However Obie just doesn't spit like this enough. He opts to use the gimmick(no gimmick?) raps that Eminem & D12 use.

14. Bubba Sparxxx - Warrant(from Deliverance) - This Starts out with some piano play, followed by some woman singing about being on the run, and about to turn herself in. I was informed by Ethompson3 that Big Boi does not rap on this track. It is Bubba who starts off with an altered flow rapping and introspective verse about living in the dirty. The singing from the guy on the chorus is tight. In his last verse he gives introspective views on death with some tremendous rhymes. At the end of the song the woman starts singing again.

13. MF Doom - Open Mic Nite pt. 1(feat. Lord Sear, Brother Sambulca, Rodan & Louis Logic)(from Vaudeville Villain) - This song starts off with with Lord Sear giving an intro for the open mic poetry event. He tells who is sponsoring and what not. Brother Sambulca comes up and gives us a poem on race. He tells how all races live the same pain of ignorance and we all need eachother, some true sh!t, then they cut his mic. Rodan goes up next and spits about doing different illegal activities. Later on in his verse he spits some really tight punchlines even though his flow does really fit this beat to me. Louis Logic comes up next and just rips the song to specs. The beat changes and He talks about how when he was a youngster and some of the mischievious things that he did back then. He talks about kicin @ss and beating up anyone who is out after curfew. This song is tight and without a doubt funny as hell.

12. Bubba Sparxxx - Nowhere(from Deliverance) - On this track Bubba Sparxxx raps about being broke and from the country. He talks introspectively about avoiding negative spirits and how he never forgot the manners his mother taught him. Bubba connects the rural lifestyle with tales usually told by urban city rappers. Bubba also shouts out Eminem in his rhymes stating that Eminem is incredible. Newcomer Kiley Dean on the chorus does a phenomenal job. Her voice is kinda ghostly and perfect for this track of being down. The beat uses some heavy claps and violins chime in during the chorus and at the end of Bubba's verses. Timbo's beat boxing in the background of the beat is also nice as the beat here sets.

11. MF Doom - Let Me Watch(feat. Apani B)(from Vaudeville Villain) -This track has a tight laid back flow to it. Vik spits about how his cousin's friend's friend wants to meet him. He tells of what she is wearing. Apani B answers to his "How Ya Doin", she starts off checkin him out and tells how Vik is 20 minutes late. She also talks about how he got tricky eyes. She talks of how her mom is all over protective. Vik answers to "tell me more about ya Vik". They both go on talking about the date and the advances Vik makes. Vik then says something wrong, this sets Apani off and they argue, as at the end of the song Apani B says "I rather masturbate than f!ck Vik Vaughn". This song is nothing less than hilarious.

10. Bow Wow - The Movement(from Unleashed) - At the 10 spot is the surprisingly tight track from Bow Wow off of his horendous Unleashed album. Bow Wow spits some sick introspective lyrics about being a young black child in the ghetto. He talks about how the ghetto has a terrible rap, but stuff happens due to cultural bias. He talks about how the world is placed on his/our generation. He tells about the wars. He says that the generation is in the crossfire. He tells that we never get answers when he ask question, but they only tell us to pull our pants up. The chorus is tight and sums up the situation of a teenager in the hood. I never expected a song like this out of Bow Wow. It is sad that I know he probably wont ever have one like this again.
"So we taking action against the democracy, full of hypocracy/
I know its more to me than my hip-hop eyes can see/
That's what the homies said to me
"

9. Bubba Sparxxx - Back in the Mudd(from Deliverance) - This track has a fast beat in the form of an uptempo, drum 'n bass throwdown. The singing on the chorus is tight. Bubba K spits about the life of a country boy with some introspective lyrics. He tries to keep up with beat and obviously cant but makes up for it with his superb lyrics and subject matter. He talks about making his mother proud, and keeping it true to everything that made him, including his rural lifestyle. This was the last song on his classic Deliverance and damn sure didn't disappoint.

8. Da Band - My Life(from Too Hot for TV) - Da Bands only top 10 showing is My Life. This song features E-Ness, Fred & Babs with Sara on the hook. It was the first real song off of Too Hot for TV and in my opinion the best. E-Ness opens up rappin about being in jail. He talks of his family situation and how stuff was when he got out. Sara drops a superb chorus on this track welcoming us to her world. Fred spits some sh!t of how he made the mistake of sellin crack out of his house and he got shot but he had his vest on and made the hater pay. Babs spits some tight sh!t of the surroundings of her neighborhood. She talks about the things going on in the hood and how she came up battling other females. The beat on this track is a perfect fit for this song and everything just sounds good here.

7. MF Doom - Vaudeville Villain(from Vaudeville Villain) - Doom's first of three top 10 songs is the album title track Vaudeville Villain. The beat on this track is tight and fits the theme. Vik tells how he doesn't care if you don't like him. He spits some rhymes full of diverse intellect and just murders this track. His rhymes are laced with metafores and comic punchlines. This was the first real song from the album and started the album off with a bang. Some people may not want to listen to Doom because of his awkward style but listening to this should just shatter thoughts of him as you will soon throw your head back in laughter.

6. Bubba Sparxxx - Comin' Round(from Deliverance) - This song is proof that Bubba Sparxxx's career assessments and self assessments have improved him at least as a rapper. Bubba Sparxxx spits some deep introspective lyrics on this. He tells about life in the south. He also spits about politics on this track, tellin how senators could give a f!ck less about the people as he just wants to win his elections. He also talks about a young boy growning up in a disfunctional household in the south. The sampled chorus from the Yonder Mountain Band is perfect for this track. The beat is absolutely crazy, with fiddle play in the background and the bass on this track is monsterous. Comin' Round barely misses the top 5.

5. Sheek - Walk Witt Me(from Walk Witt Me) - Sheek jumps off the top 5 with Walk Witt Me. The production on this track is pretty weak, we get some soft humming, and a slow plodding piano. Sheek absolutely kills it though and makes up for any short-comings the beat may have. He spits some introspective hood life situations, of a brother on his down and outs. He talks about how we don't need these racial problems. He tells how the great Malcomb X and Martin Luther King should still be alive. He tells of the possibilities of a black face on a dollar bill. He keeps hope alive in which there are not death penalties and abortions. He tells the women out there to cover up esp whe they got lil' daughters will will only grow up to be like them. He then realizes he may be asking for too much. He dreams of waking up and there are no murders on the 5'OClock news, no more kid gettin killed over the newest Jordan kicks. He dreams a place where we don't value money, just the air we breathe. A place where there are no more beers, liquor, no more wars, fights, jails, no more stocks, or shares. He then again says he know it could never happen and he just rappin and dreamin. Great song from Sheek.

4. Bubba Sparxxx - She Tried(from Deliverance) - What makes this song so great is that you just feel Bubba on this. His voice shows the sadness he feels on this track. He spits about his self-inflicted pain of driving his "Betty" away with his selfish lifestyle. He ponders on what could have been and the family they could've had. He puts so much feeling and emotion into this track its unbelievable. Not to mention the fact that lyrically he shines. You kind of feel like you in the car with one of your boys who just f!cked up with his love and he is spilling his soul onto you, and regreting everything that caused the fall out, even though its too late. He even tells that six months pass and she is in love with a hard-workin man which is what he wanted all along, instead of a rebel like himself. This beat also uses more violin strings, and bassquakes, which set the depressing atmosphere on this track. The guy on the chorus singing does a helluva job here, as he also helps set the depressing mood. Another great song from Bubba K.

3. MF Doom - Change the Beat(from Vaudeville Villain) - The momment of truth. The top three songs of the month! This month we start it with MF Doom's Change the Beat. This is a hidden track on Vaudeville Villain as it starts off with about a full three minutes of raining and thunderstorms. Vik then burst out of the rain spitting pure venom. The supervillain spits some anti-superhero rhymes here laced with hilarious punchlines and some minor introspection. He also states he is a villain for hire. "Have the average emcee say, give me a sick day/They really aint got sh!t to say like Timmy McVeigh". This song is sickenin and I thought it was the best on the album. However after listening to the album over and over again the next song grew on me.
"Good Googaly-Moogaly, see that lugie/
Yeah keep it on the D. L. Hughley/
Ya don't watch here, he might house her like Doogie/
Just to cut her loosey like (Swish) Mitsurugi/
"

2. MF Doom - Saliva(from Vaudeville Villain) - Coming in at runner-up for song of the month is MF Doom's Saliva. RJD2 produced this banger. This beat is absolutely sick, It is dominated by herky-jerky drums, horns and banging bass. Vik spits some braggadocio, laced with some witty punchlines, all in third person. Vik boast that he "plays the back and gets bent like scoliosis". Viks lyrics on this track are amongst the best on the Vaudeville Villain album. Spitting wicked bars like "Tell em the basics, basically break the matrix and just for kicks make em gel like Asics". Sh!t is just crazy man.

1. Bubba Sparxxx-Deliverance (from Deliverance) - Here we are at numbero uno and the winner of the first ever MajaFiggaz song of the month, is Bubba Sparxxx, with Deliverance! If you haven't heard it yet the beat consist of strummed guitars and monsterous, Incredible Hulk hand-claps, and everyone knows when you use hand-claps your guarenteed to get people moving, especially when the song is absolutley sickenin. He sheds light on the risks and rewards of his own improbable life story, a country boy making it as a world famous rapper. He spits about his post-Dark Days Bright Nights life also and his re-assesments. His introspective rhymes on this track still will make the most commercial fan feel him. His lyrics are as deep as they can get and will make you re-wind to understand his plight. Timbo on the chorus is tremendous. Sh!tting on Pharells lack of singing talent and showing he can actually hit notes. Etch this one down in the books as one of the greatest hip-hop tracks of all-time crafted by a country fried white boy...Bubba Sparxxx!
Verse 1:
"I left off of mama's with my thumb in the wind/
The leaves on the ground, winter's comin again/
Solid on the surface as I crumble within/
But legends are made out of honorable men/
So on the brink of death I still manage livin life/
Cause so rarely in this world are these chances given twice/
I indeed sold my soul, without glancing at the price/
No instructions when I was handed this device/
But with what I did get, I was more than generous/
Put others over self on several instances/
But I'm back on my feet without a hint of bitterness/
And one way or another I shall have deliverance
"
Verse 3:
"Nothing could atone for the pain you've endured/
The blood you shed is still stained in your valor/
You took your wealth and knowledge and gave it to the poor/
Only to discover that your savior's manure/
Accepted me as kin, put before your younger brother/
They put a lot on us hardly knowin one another/
I honestly can say that over time I've come to love you/
Now we are brothers and together no one can touch us/
It hauls me with regret I never met your baby girl/
She's an angel on your shoulder helpin us to save the world/
This musical marriage is no coincedence/
So my mama to me baby we shall have deliverance
"

So there you have it my first ever top 20 songs of the month list. Bubba Sparxxx gives us the classic Deliverance track along with 6 others off of his Deliverance album, with 4 of them coming in the top 10. MF Doom also makes a great effort grabbing the 2nd and 3rd spots and overall he finishes with 6 songs on the list. Sheek Louch comes away with the number 5 and 20 songs. Bow Wow surprises with his un-commercial The Movement. Da Band gives us 3 tight songs and Obie drops a good song also. Until next time y'all peace.
