The Bottom Line No. Books are NOT FREE! Calculate costs after shipping, handling AND the purchase of the REQUIRED BOOKS at "Members Price". Get the same books (used) on line, cheaper, faster.
All of the popular book clubs charge shipping and handling that is more than Amazon.com or Half.com. I am 58 years old, read all day, and have subscribed to many book clubs, Doubleday, Literary, Mystery, over the last 20 years. The concept of the subscription book club is GREAT - if someone cared about customer service. I kept thinking their service would improve over time, so in a few years I would re-join. Same problems: (1) they often send the wrong books (2) don't credit the returned books for months, if ever (3) charges are wrong about 50% of the time and (4) you can't use their website to check anything about your account. The information on mine is always, no kidding ALWAYS, wrong. It is a wonder to me that they stay in business. I guess people really believe they are getting "free" books? I can buy all the "like new" books I want from Half.com and Amazon.com for no more than $4.25, TOTAL! I usually buy books priced at $0.75 on Half.com and $0.01 at Amazon.com. Yep ONE PENNY. Check it out. I buy last year's bestsellers for about $4.50 TOTAL! By being careful who I buy from, I always get good as new books within 5 days of ordering - right in my mailbox. Only once have I failed to receive the book I ordered and I got a refund from Half.com. I particularly like Half.com because if you buy more than one book from the same seller you get half-priced shipping on all but the first book. If you have more money than you can use and nothing to do with your time except write nasty letters to book clubs then sure, join and pretend like you are getting something FREE. But don't make my mistake and give them your credit card number. It seemed like a good idea. Get all the best new books, automatically charged, delivered to my door? Nope. Its often the wrong book or the charge is wrong or it is sent twice -- or never. I think they have accounting people that just sit around punching numeric key pads saying, "Let's charge Lynn $19.49 today just for fun. No book; no order for a book; just a charge. Whee!". But maybe you have lots of money and just don't care where it goes? Or for that matter what you read? Fine. Join. You will get books... and bills. |
