| scout93721's Full Review: 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac |
I recently towed my 18 foot boat with my 2004 Ford Explorer and found a transmission leak. I was told that my vehicle with a class 11 towing package was not adequate to haul a boat of this size( it's only 18 feet in length. Also for the last couple of years I had the vehicle in the shop to check out the "clunking" noise I heard when turning at slow speeds; they said this is "normal" for Fords' four-wheel drive vehicles. Interesting, I thought that I had purchase a four-wheel drive SUV when in fact it turns out to be more or less a "VAN". Ford has once again "downgraded" a once very popular and capable off the road vehicle to a "better stay on the road vehicle with the whole "family". I owned one of the very first SUVs when you had to get out of the vehicle to lock the front end wheels by hand. Then I purchased the next generation "automatic hubs" SUV which had lots of problems with locking the front hubs. But the fisherman, the hunter, mom and the kids, and the entire family could safely travel in this vehicle thru the worst of weather. You could also have it do a little work and not worry about it braking down. At first the true SUV was a Godsend because here was a vehicle that provided all a safe and capable off the road and on the road vehicle for everyone. Now we have come full circle and Ford has produced a not as safe, smaller, and less efficient product they still call an SUV. I say beware when you purchase one of these very expensive vehicles called SUVs, the truth is they are nothing more than a smaller version of the old Van. What else would you call a vehicle with 6 folding seats in the back and a DVD player for all the kids to watch? Beware Moms, these vehicle are a long ways from the safety and endurance margins of their predecessors. And even if you consider the width to height ratios of the old Vans which were safer simply because they were large, the FORD "nowadays SUV" is very small in comparison. But if you still like to be led down the FORD SUV road may I recommend the Expedition only because it is the closest to those old Vans due to it's shear size. The only real drawback is you are going to pay about $35,000.00 plus dollars for what is essentially a "VAN".
