| erthmun's Full Review: Mach 5 Cyclonic Bagless Upright U5194900 |
I purchased this product back on March 10, 2007. I mainly purchased it to replace an OLD Hoover Plus with WindTunnel Technology bagged vacuum cleaner which belonged to my spouse and over the past 3 years I had really learned to despise that , well, you put in the missing words.....
The old one was everything one would NOT want in a vacuum cleaner. Noisy, messy, constantly clogging Hepa filters, miserable at picking anything up. I had more luck with masking tape wrapped around my hand and swiping it over the carpet. Anyways, out with the old and in with the new.
This new Mach 5 is a keeper ! I am amazed at the functionality of this product. After getting it out of the box and assembling it (not much to the assembly), this piece of art really resembles a robot. I like brand new things, all shiny and clean. Have to warn you though, after one use your super clear cannister will no longer look super clear.....
The first time I turned this vacuum cleaner on I had to wonder if it would have enough power to do anything. But don't let the quiet fool you ! This vacuum is a MONSTER picker upper ! I can actually listen to a tv program, the stereo, or hold a conversation with someone else in the room and I don't have to shout.
All attachments fit perfectly on the side of the cleaner and the extension wands are located conveniently in the back. The hose comes out easily to use your extensions on ceiling fans or whatever you may have beyond your normal arms reach. The handle is adjustable in length from about 1 inch to about 6 inches. All control buttons are brightly colored easily findable and their functions are stamped on them or right next to them.
The carpet height adjustment knob works quite easily and has 5 settings. The Roller Brush lever is foot activated and has an indicator as to whether it is on or off. This is one function that got me right after I first bought this machine. The brush automatically goes off when the vacuum cleaner is in the upright position. It then automatically engages whenever you push the foot lever to select a vacuuming angle. (Hint: I figured that out all by myself after I tore the whole bottom of the vacuum cleaner apart to change a brand new belt with another brand new belt thinking the old one had stretched out after 3 uses - the belts don't go bad that quickly).
Changing that belt was not the easiest thing in the world. I really couldn't recommend it for someone with limited mechanical ability. There are a lot of phillips head screws to remove and parts to work around and remove but after your first time it should come easily.
I love the cord rewind ! The electrical cord is listed at 28 feet and is plenty long enough for my needs. One suggestion, do not just push the cord rewind button and laugh at how fast the cord comes ripping back into its housing. At the speed it travels it will snake its plug end and possibly clip your ankle or back of leg thus leaving a nice red welt.(Just ask my spouse about that one - teehee)
The cannister that holds all the nasty that you've vacuumed up is sufficient for a days cleaning. It is very easy to empty with the push of a button located at the top of the cleaner. The only drawback on this cannister is that you can't just push it back in. You need to push the button again to replace the cannister. Smacking it back in would not be recommended. It may be easier to get back in once the newness of the parts wears off.
I can't say much about the Hepa filters removal. I haven't had to do it yet but the company claims they are a lifetime part and only need to be washed, (another feature I liked). I also haven't used the upholstery brush (sorry, leather furniture, so we just wipe it), but it looks sturdy enough and one day I may give it a tryout in my vehicle.
The weight of this vacuum may be of some concern to a few people. I'm thinking it's right around 21 lbs. There is a carry handle on top of the cannister housing and it is comfortable to use.
I hmmmmed and hawed for months about which vacuum cleaner to get to replace our old dinosaur. I read reviews, researched and did more research and still continued to question which was the best to get. I have to admit, I am glad that I chose this one. The price was where I wanted it to be and I feel this unit performs flawlessly. As an example, I have 3 indoor cats of which 2 are long haired and shedding is always all over the carpet and bare floors. This vacuum has no problem at all picking all the fur up whether on bare floors or the carpet. I have 2 types of carpet, short and medium length pile. Sometimes I'm concerned that with all the things going in the vacuum cleaner that I'm sucking up some of the pile with everything else, but that's not the case. It is just a case of a VERY clean carpet.
