BadkittyM Gets Long Winded over Long Snakes! My Entry to Xiphoid's W/O.

Oct 15 '03 (Updated Oct 25 '03)

The Bottom Line http://www.epinions.com/content_53134331524 (Your jumping off point for buying a pet snake)

This review is my entry to the "That review was so long, I..." Write-Off, hosted by Xiphoid.

The purpose of the write-off is to hunt out a lo-o-ong Epinions review, and then review it!

I've chosen a particularly helpful review by BadkittyM, titled: Is That A Boa In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?

I'm as guilty as anyone of going off and writing something long and unruly, so believe me when I say that my purpose in reviewing Marcy's (BadkittyM) long-winded piece is not to condemn or ridicule. In fact, I deem this particular review to be one of the most informative and worth while texts you could ever hope to find on Epinions. It's enjoyable, funny, and packed with loads (excuse me... Scads) of crunchy bits of important data.

It also happens to be long as hell, with a word count pushing six thousand.

While I would like nothing more than to take up six thousand words praising Marcy and her incredibly detailed review, I dare say that would become very repetitive and overly tedious right quick! With that in mind, I promise to keep myself brief and stick to the point.

BadkittyM Gets Long Winded over Long Snakes!

During my life, I've befriended quite a few people. I've met all types from all races, ages and stages. I've learned that it takes all kinds to make the world spin around and I've valued the differences in many of the people I've met.

Among my many friends, a few are what I would call snake-people, and by that, I do not mean that they're slimy or sneaky or legless! I'm referring to those friends of mine who have a passion for keeping snakes as pets.

One of these "snake-people" is Marcy, and I'm very fortunate to count her as a personal and trusted friend. I consider her (and her partner Chris) to be among the most kind, generous and respectful people I've met while living in Los Angeles, and I hold her in the highest regard.

When she originally posted her review as a three-part introduction to responsible pet ownership regarding snakes, I took great interest in what she had to say. She is, after all, my most trusted authority on the subject.

The first time I read it, I was struck by how little I'd previously understood about the snakes that my friends kept. The article was endlessly interesting to me and I recall even forwarding it along to some people I thought would benefit from it.

Specifically, and unfortunately, I'm now thinking of a good friend of mine who would do well to read this article and take some of it's more pointed advice. Especially compared to Marcy, this friend of mine is what I'd call a not-so-exemplary snake person! I recently found out that he took his unlicensed pythons to the street where he charged tourists a small donation to snap a picture or two with a snake wrapped around their necks. He keeps illegal venomous vipers and rattlesnakes in his tiny apartment, cramped in little aquariums and plastic crates along side scorpions and spiders. There's a photograph of him handling his most lethal snake while drunk.

I completely expect to get a phone call any day informing me of his untimely death after having been struck by a gaboon viper in his sleep. He's probably the first person I'll call when the big one hits LA because I'm sure those glass cages he keeps his pets in are far from earthquake proof.

This guy is a friend of mine, mind you, but his behavior makes me want to smack him on the back of his head. Marcy would be far less tolerable, I'm sure, as she thoroughly outlines responsible behavior from snake owners and repeatedly discourages the crap my friend keeps pulling.

"Is That A Boa In Your Pocket, Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?" is a detailed, step-by-step guide to choosing, buying, and caring for a pet boa constrictor or python. Whether you or someone you know is looking to buy or already owns a pet snake, this review will be an informative resource throughout your pet ownership.

Some of the many topics covered:

* Popular Breeds

* Behaviors and Characteristics (including expected lengths and sizes and info regarding shedding)

* Feeding and Care

* Costs/Expenses

* Common Misconceptions and Myths

* Where do You get a Permit?

* What do You do if Your Snake Escapes?

Learn the Four Constrictor Commandments and find out why Marcy advises against buying a used snake.

Discover why snakes flick out their tongues, how they sleep without eyelids, and learn what you should absolutely not do before your baby snake sheds it's first skin.

Wondering what the hell you're going to do with that pencil, cardboard box and pinky mouse after getting your baby snake home for the first time? Believe me, if you're considering the purchase of a baby boa, you'll want to know.

And finally, the age old question is finally answered: Do snakes fart?

All of this information is well presented, thoroughly researched and thoughtfully organized. Plus, there are links to countless other sites that will answer further questions and offer deeper explanations or insights.

While long, the review still reads very quickly and isn't bogged down by repetition or banality. It also retains the sense of humor and straight forward honesty that one expects from a BadkittyM review. I highly recommend this as your springboard to research if you or someone you know is considering the addition of a fork tongued family member.

Now go read it for yourself!

And take some time to check out the other participants in this write-off. Thanks for reading!
