Deliberate Cruelty Is Unforgivable (Songs I F*cking Hate Write-off)
by plorentz | Oct 15 '03
Honestly, I'm a nice guy with nary a misanthropic bone in my body, but these songs make me want to hate people and break the law...

Rule #5: Keep it brief. There’s a whole audience of people waiting for their own chance at karaoke glory. They will resent you and possibly plot your assassination if you sign up to do “American Pie” by Don McLean.

Goodness...a friend of mine sang American Pie for a karaoke night. It was all good until 5 hours later we were still standing there and waiting for it to end. Seriously, this is like the longest. song. ever. made. You're right- NEVER choose it for karaoke...even Don McLean should stray away from performing it.

Great list...most of those songs annoy the heck out of me too :)

American Pie? (Reply to this comment)

You probably only hate "American Pie" because it's the only song I'll be caught singing publicly.

But "Swanging" is one that heads my all-time hate list. Hopefully you've never heard this song ("Just a swanging"). Oooh, my skin's crawling already.

Other Karaoke Faux Pas... (Reply to this comment)

"Hotel California," "Free Bird," Let's see, what other songs are f*cking long...oh, "Bohemian Rhapsody,"...and I personally hate it when there's a whole gaggle of country fans hogging the mike and bleating out a neverending succession of slow, corny ballads that put a damper on my beer buzz...(i.e. Tim Mcgraw's "Don't Take the Girl"...ech I'm choking on the sap just thinking about it).

Anyway, great write-up. (:

Shelly-

A marching band version of "Friends in Low Place"??

I almost want to hear that.

When I was in band we did "Who's Johnny" by El DeBarge from "Short Circuit"!

Yeah, for some reason I started writing this review thinking that somewhere deep inside his back catalog, Michael Bolton had some redeeming moment, but it's just not true. Every last thing he has every recorded is execrable.

And while I'm not a huge huge fan of Neil Young, I do generally respect him as a songwriter, but "Let's Roll" is absolutely unforgivable. I've never heard "A Man Needs a Maid", but the title alone makes me wanna slap the guy.

"My former boss, who was gay, loved It's Raining Men."

Yes, although Queer Eye for the Straight Guy would have us believe that gay men are purveyors of good taste, the opposite is all too often true. As evidenced by each successive International Male catalog.

I generally consider Michael Bolton to be the physical embodiment of all earthly evil, and yet… umm, well, that’s not a very good example

That made me laugh.

I'm right there with you on the Sweet Home Alabama thing, though for me it's because every twelve minutes throughout my High School years some idiot would play it or sing it or refer to it with great reverence. Bleagh.

And although I like Neil Young, both your choice and A Man Needs a Maid should be stricken from the annals of his work.

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest, I feel much better.

My former boss, who was gay, loved It's Raining Men. I used to give him a bunch of crap about it - Dan, even if I were gay, I would hate this song. Yet he still played the sh*t out of it. Ugh.

But the American Pie rant was too much. My girlfriend sings karaoke, I go to watch. And damned if someone doesn't get up there to struggle his way through it. STOP!

Nice, very nice.

but get extremely sick of hearing "Friends." I NOW have to make my own list because, hey, I think I can add a "country" version to it.

Great as always...

I grew up in the hickest of hickvilles. Although (thank god) I never liked country music. But with that said, it was hard to escape--and Friends In Low Places was one of the cruelest of songs. It was played at school dances, and horror of all horrors we actually performed it in marching band.

AAAAAHHHHHH!

Nice review.
