By the way, in 2004 I finished my novel! Now I'm off to edit and revise. Maybe one day you'll all be reading and reviewing "Mysterious Paris."

50,000 words... novel vs novelette.
Tom, you're right that 50,000 words is between novelette and typical novel size. A typical young adult novel, or smaller romance novels are 50,000 words. I view 50,000 words as the first draft... with revisions to be longer (e.g. with sub-plots expanded, additional details added, etc.) In any case, a larger goal would be overwhelming.
p.s. Like your quote!

50000 words !?!
Hell, that's barely a tolerable Eps review!
you said...
A deadline that's barely possible (when you have a day job and other activities) means there's no time to procrastinate if you want to finish."
That accounts for my using write-offs for the same purpose. Gotta have the 'Jimmy Olson, cub reporter' pressure!
Good luck on this year's novel...novelette?!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
My 28 year old son recently gave me a "how to" book in reference to writing.
I believe he's giving pops some subtle hints of his abilities of putting out reviews here at Epinions.
I wish you 50,000 words this year.
