The art of packing well is a painfully acquired one. Maybe my experiences will shorten your learning curve.

Great packing tips! I am moving to a small apartment right now while our house is being built, and you've given me quite a few good ideas! Thanks! Suzanne

Well, my ZIP isn't 900--, and I'm quite close-in, so I don't expect the bad guys to know exactly where it is.

Either way, though, it's a small action you can take to increase your security. It costs nothing, can't hurt, and might help.

Whatever.

It should also be pointed out that anyone around LAX who doesn't know that 900xx is Los Angeles. and that 900-935 (or so) is Southern California isn't very observant. If you (the thief) wants to specialize in particular cities, you can probably memorize those zip codes, as well. I don't see the point of leaving the city off. However, if you (the traveler) use a PO Box or PMB (Private MailBox) or your work address, it won't do the thieves much good.

Some luggage -- (Reply to this comment)

has (have) space for the address label under a flap or slider, so that you have to slide it open to read the address. Think that would help?

Yeah, I always took too much and it never turned out to be exactly what I needed. So now it's all layers and mostly black with some colors and it seems to work better.

Great travel is like great food - it's all in the prep work!

I'm sure they do, too, but probably not at the airport. And even if they do, I try to make it as hard as possible for them.

so the next time you see some guy without luggage hanging around in the ticketing line with a laptop balanced on one hand or a ZIP code directory, flip your luggage tags over!

professional thieves have a zip code directory or internet access to usps.gov .

This is fantastic - I'm a terrible overpacker, yet alway manage to leave things behind (like an umbrella). These are excellent guidelines. Oh, and I never, ever leave home without at least one ziploc bag - the hard-won knowledge of having children ;)

I'm guessing that while most of us knew some of these tricks, none of knew them all, so that alone makes this a consumeriffic review.

But more important, I think, is your underlying message that too many people forget: travel can be illuminating, humbling, educational, and great fun, particularly if one is unencumbered by needless minutiae, many of which can be avoided by following your advice.

Bravo.

I tried the separate bags idea but gave it up because the whole idea is to have LESS to keep track of, and it was just too many baggies.

Also, my every-day make-up consists of concealer, mascara, blush, and lip gloss. When I get all dolled up, which I rarely do on vacation, I simply add a smudge of eye pencil and lipstick. All that fits neatly into a single zip-lock, and I don't have to worry about keeping track of more than one.

Well, I figure that the more I do in preparation, the less I have to worry about this stuff on the road. A lot of it lives in my luggage so I don't have to worry about it.

I started using the S-hook after a stay at a rather unkempt campground where there was no clean, dry place to put my bag in the shower-house. I keep a big lightweight plastic one in my bag now.

This will be MOST HELPFUL to so many. I do quite a bit that you do. And I just love zip lock bags.....which reminds me...leaving in 2 days and I need to buy more. I carry one bag for each type of cosmetics, so I can easily find what I am looking for. One bag for eye makeup, one for lipsticks, etc.

Really good stuff!

My best,
