Neither have I. I don't even get cable, which is practically a crime in this country.

I enjoyed your quote

I’ve come to the conclusion, from weeks of persistent research, that 678 channels is approximately 670 too many. Sorry to break this to many of you TV addicts out there, but you could easily condense all the good shows into the 8 remaining channels, chop down on all the really crappy ads and leave the good ones in. The 670 channels’ worth of shonky reality TV shows, home/fashion/pet wombat makeover shows, melodramatic soaps and crappy preteen/teenie shows can take a hike.

It made my weekly top 100 quote list in October and made the top 40 this past week. Good job!

Oh, trust me, I've eaten those damn things, and yuck, they're filthy! Anyway, the metric system is a lot more user-friendly - the units are so much easier to follow. That's what happens with standardised measurements, rather than a hodgepodge of things. Cheers!

IIRC, the Mars probe failed because the programmer used kg weight rather than the proper unit of force (newtons?)

Actually, I think it was a failure to convert from metric to customary, or vice versa. But if it had been a kg/N problem, well that's just stupidity. My problem with the customary stuff is that a pound mass weighs a pound force, and if you divide a pound force by gravity then you get slugs, but nobody uses slugs, ever!

According to my dictionary...

See, you had to look it up!

I'm an engineer and I hate customary units. Pounds force or pounds mass? How many ounces are in a hogshead? Inches in a furlong? Damned if I know. Give me metric any day!

Metric has problems, too -- IIRC, the Mars probe failed because the programmer used kg weight rather than the proper unit of force (newtons?).

As for "weight", are you trying to say the Aussies don't worry about their WEIGHT as opposed to their MASS?

As for customary units, ask any horse racing junky how many inches in a furlong (12*5280/8=7920). According to my dictionary, a hogshead may be 63 gallons or 8064 ounces. (My dictionary states, in definition 2, "A liquid measure, esp. one equal to 63 gallons, or 8.42 cubic feet.") It's the various ounces (dry measure, liquid measure, and 3 weight (or mass) scales) and pounds (3 different scales) -- pun intended) that cause confusion.

Ask me about conversion between kilo-(rationalized)nautical miles and Mm some time.
(A nautical mile was supposed to be 1/21600 of the length of the Earth's equator, just as the meter was supposed to be 1/1000000 of the distance from the equator to the north pole along the meridian through Greenwich .)

Hey Adam,

Sounds like you haven't seen Altoids mints; the tin proclaims them to be "curiously strong." Also, I'm an engineer and I hate customary units. Pounds force or pounds mass? How many ounces are in a hogshead? Inches in a furlong? Damned if I know. Give me metric any day!

My Brit friends are always astonished when I tell them it's necessary to cross the Atlantic for a decent bar of chocolate. Here, the Cadbury is produced by Hershey. Who thought that one up? Hershey doesn't make Cadbury taste quite as bad as Hershey, but it's still better in the UK!

This was an enjoyable read, but you forgot to discuss American pop music, which is in the toilet because it panders to 13-year-olds with no brains. American pop radio is almost completely unlistenable.

whether or not the strongmints are American or not, they've certainly taken to them in a big way! I hated those things. European chocolate is great - I absolutely love Lindt, though I do wonder what reputation it has in Europe, seeing as there'd be a lot more choice. I'll be writing more, so keep an eye out! Cheers, and you're welcome,

TV, religious TV, gas prices, crappy American chocolate, bad drivers - right on target with all those things. However, I think Americans have only appropriated the super strong mint idea. I know that my current place of residence is the origin of Frisk mints, which are bascially nuclear Tic Tacs. It's also the source of the best damn chocolate I've found anywhere, though I'm certainly open to the possibility that something better might be waiting for me out there, somewhere. Hershey's chocolate is an abomination, my upbringing in PA notwithstanding. Did you know that Hershey deliberately soured the milk he put in his milk chocolate. No wonder it sucks. My residence in Belgium has entirely converted me to dark chocolate. Who knew that dark chocolate doesn't have to be bitter and chalky?

Always a pleasure to see my own culture through a foreigner's eyes. Thanks.

I rarely watch TV myself - we only have 6 channels here and even then, they cram them full of crap! So I don't watch it very often ;) it's really a waste of money!

Try 677 too many. I didn't realize until I got rid of cable two years ago how easy it is to make due with only one channel. It's amazing really ;)

So funny, and so true! I will never understand the burning cinnamon anything - I'll take my cinnamon with a big load of sugar. And Waffle Houses - so help me are the most foul things ever. Four walls and a grubby short order cook. Bleagh.

I'll be looking forward to the next installment!

You've given me much to think about! What a riot. Cinnamon is not something I expected to see. Thanks for the laugh!

And I've always been against TV, but now that I'm breastfeeding for like 10 hours each day ... I'm finding myself a victim of reality shows and Jerry Springer and basic cable pollution. :)

Great to see you writing!

Love,

Becki

Oi!! That was a fair read. Thanks for putting the effort in anyway, much appreciated. I must say I did try the Ghirardelli and even then, they weren't quite up to muster, though they weren't BAD. Just not that great either. Oh, and I must say that chocolate and orange do go well together, at least with Terry's Orange thingies - they are so good!

I can't possibly respond to all this now - this is the longest comment I've ever read on my reviews, so thanks! My next diatrible will be around soon-ish ;)

Yeah, holy bejeezus those things were hot. Thank God the water was there is all I can say, because otherwise I'd be pissing and moaning a whole lot more! Remind me never to drive in LA, by the way. It was horrible enough being passenger.

Oh, and pity about those Bombers - but at least they did better than my lot did!

Petrol: Yes, most Americans Are pretty clueless, even those who make effort. In the end though, everything is relative. Your either an American who Doesn't cry with a loaf of bread under your arm, or your one who beleives their mission in life is to Whine about everything. (ie More money than brain cells)

Chocolate: For Good American chocolate, you must purchase Ghiradhelli's chocolate from San Francisco. Mostly this is a case of dumb consumers though. It's been so many generations since they had Good chocolate, they don't know the difference. As for the whole nuts issue, sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't. Personally, I love a good sweet chocolate salty something combo and will skip nuts of any sort in favor of chocolate dipped pretzels rolled in toffee chips. While we're on the subject though, I can't understand why so many people insist on ruining perfectly good chocolate And perfectly good oranges in an attempt to blend two things that taste Horrid together.

Cinnamon: Oh, this one is easy. Certain things like toothpaste and mints come in this flavor as an alternative to Mint. I don't care for things that burn the roof off of my mouth either though. You have to be cautious in this area. I generally wait til someone I know actually pays for one of these things and then ask if I can sample their purchase. If it's a particularly strong product, I'll hate myself far less if I didn't actually Pay for it. :D

Peppermints: You got me on this one. I blame it on inbreeding.

Football: It's sports. It's alllll sports. I don't care one way or the other, but far too many people take sports of ally types Way too seriously.

God Channels: Hehehe, it's even More fun when you turn off the sound and make up your own dialogue. :D As for devoting channels to it...if you really look hard enough you'll notice that All major religions are represented on TV. Nature channel, Shopping Channel, Travel and History Channel usually make up the rest.

TV: I agree with you again, which is why I Don't have 670 channels. Just the four that I can get in on the antenna. Stupid, lazy, inbred consumers strike again. :)

Waffle Houses: Hmm, well North of the Mason Dixon line it's what we call drugstores (bit of everything really with pharmacies and photo developing thrown in). You could plot your way across America by these things, really.

Drivers: Again, vast increase in stupid, lazy, inbread citizens. They got one of their own into the Oval Office, what do you expect?

Metric/Imperial: Ok, not only are a majority of us lazy and/stupid...we're stubborn too. "We fear change" and it's soooo much bother to learn one system that we Really can't be bothered to switch midstream and learn something completely different.

Whew! Hope I've done my part for intercontinental relations. Nobody puked on anybody else, nobody got bombed. Yep, looks like my job here is done. :D
