Nursing Simplicity - Simply The Best!

The Bottom Line When it comes to nursing, less is more!

One of the best things about breastfeeding is the sheer simplicity. So in recommending nursing accessories, I have to say less is more. Nothing can equal being able to satisfy baby at a moment's notice, with the mere lifting of your shirt.

First of all you should get yourself a good nursing book. I recommend La Leche League's "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding." I can't tell you how many times I have flipped through my nursing books for advice, even now with my second child!

Next, get a nursing pillow. I own 2: a Boppy, and another one that is much thicker. They're both wonderful. I use the Boppy normally, and switch to the thicker one when I need the extra height. A nursing pillow will help to keep you from hunching over too much, which could cause back strain.

If you're planning on going back to work, or leaving your baby with a sitter during the early months, you'll want to get a good breastpump. I'm a SAHM, and won't leave my baby early on, so I don't worry about this. But the Medela Pump in Style double electric pump is supposed to be great. I've also heard wonderful things about the Avent pumps.

Most importantly, - and yes, I know this isn't an "accessory," per se - you'll need commitment and a stubborn streak. Why? Commitment to get you through the early weeks, when babies sometimes seem to nurse constantly. Stubbornness to combat naysayers who will try to convince you that you don't have enough milk when the baby is nursing round the clock. You know the type; they're the ones who for some reason seem to want to undermine breastfeeders whenever they can. Don't listen to them! They're WRONG. Use that stubborn streak, stick up for what you are doing, and continue on! (Hint - only a very small percentage of women don't make enough milk. Breastfeeding is on a supply and demand basis. The more you nurse, the more you make, so nurse away!)

Above all, be confident in yourself and your ability to nurture your baby. You have made the best choice - now enjoy watching your precious child grow in health!
