Beware of New York City Metropolitan hotel

Oct 28 '03

The Bottom Line So my dear reader friend here is an word of advice, if travelling to NY, Manhattan city, DO NOT STAY AT METROPOLITAN HOTEL.

I traveled to New York city for first time in my life, on a much anticipated visit during Oct 2003. But.. I made one mistake, I booked my room in Metropolitan hotel. Metropolitan is located on Lexington Avenue, near the intersection with 51st street.
Trouble started soon after checkin in. We stepped in a cold room, and i switched on the heater, it was blowing cold air and we waited for few minutes to see if it gets warmer but it did not. I called front desk and explained the problem, I was transferred to another room attendant, and she transferred me to hotel maintainance, finally after explaining my problem for the 4th time, and quite exasperated, i demanded to be shifted to a another room or have someone fix the problem. And they plainly refused.
I went to front desk, and requested to see the "Manager". I was told "Manager" would be there in 10 minutes. Travelling with my baby, I decided to settle this problem, because I dint want to spend the night in a cold room. Meanwhile some other people also gathered with the same complaint near the front desk. AFter several minutes of wait we were told that "the manager" has stepped out of the hotel and would reuturn at 11:00 P.M. We explianed our misery to the front desk clerk and demanded an expainatation. She said "The heat is not working in several rooms, you see even the lobby is cold. The heating is controlled by a machine which is located downstairs and it comes on automatically when there is enough cold and we have no control over it".
Baffeled we argued, and complained. Two of us decided to wait there until some authority shows up with pluasible explaination. Finally we were told that "the manager" would come to see us. We asked "dint you say he/she was out and would return at 11:00 P.M". We were told "Oh she had stepped out of the bldg, but you see we have radios, these are very powerful radios, and she is coming now". Finally "the manager" showed up, and repeated the same story. To our dismay the hotel did not arrange for any space heaters or any other heating arrangement. We were told that "the GM of hotel Mr. Katrak" would be coming in the morning and we could speak to him. We spent the entire night in darn cold room, and in the morning when we approached the manager and staff, their attitude was totally indifferent. They refused to pay back reservation money.
In my past travels I've been in situtions where things were broke or other problems, but every time the staff made some effort to accomodate the guests or make alternate arrangement. At Metropolitan hotel, NY the attitude was plain indifference, utter ignorace towards guests. So my dear reader friend here is an word of advice, if travelling to NY, Manhattan city, DO NOT STAY AT METROPOLITAN HOTEL.
