Don't read this listOct 30 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line It made my list if: It gave me nightmares as an adult, traumatized me in childhood or it remains a powerful film despite its assimiliation into modern culture. 1. The Exorcist 2. Mark of the Devil 3. Mothman Prophecies 4. Alien 5. Freaks 6. Nightmare on Elm Street (the original only) 7. The People Under the Stairs 8. Psycho 9. The Head that Wouldn't Die 10 (3 way tie) The Fly (Most recent version), Hellraiser and The Blair Witch Project Blair Witch, Mothman Prophesies and The Fly worked for me because of the reality of that the actors brought to the characters or the situation. Nightmare works because it gave me one the same night I saw it and which replicated the "Am I or am I not dreaming" theme of the movie. Mark of the Devil contains twisted, sadistic, gratuitous but nonetheless haunting torture scenes, which would qualify it on its own but it is also the movie my parents accidentally dropped me off at the movies to see instead of Herbie the Love Bug when I was 8. Freaks and The People Under The Stairs are both horrifying, one intentionally and one unintentionally, because they both center around how terrifying society can be. Alien and Psycho are just excellent movies period that still hold up after the sequels and becoming part of the zeitgeist. The Head That Wouldnt Die is a nod to the B movies of the 50's and 60's that I watched with one eye open during my childhood. And finally, The Excorcist, because it not only still haunts my dreams with regularity, it also haunts my soul. |
