California or Bust: Four Years Later
by Officer | Nov 15 '03
It's been exactly four years since I left Minneapolis and committed myself to the pursuit of that elusive Hollywood dream. Now seemed like a good time to check in.

Your review freaked me out because I actually thought for a second that they were going to make THE TERMINAL 2. Then I looked at the date and realized that I haven't read any of your reviews in a really really long time. But that is good that you are not working on a sequel to that god awful movie. Well, not yet anyway. Give them another six months, they'll make one. This time it will be set in a Greyhound Bus Terminal and Zeta-Jones will be a crack wh*ore who lives in the bathroom.

...was such an incredible read, I'm going back and reading it again. Unbelievably well-written. Ditto what Marcy said down there... I couldn't say it any better myself.

Hi Ryan,

I'm glad I finally found this progress report of yours. I admire your persistence in the face of adversity; if there is any justice in this world, you certainly deserve some kind of reward.

Still, who knows what's in store: this could be our Year of Living Dangerously. Maybe we'll be running for our lives as the Empire crumbles all around us. Revolution, civil war, anarchy? Love amid the ruins? It's not "just a movie" anymore.

Best wishes,
Wayne

This is a general thanks to all the people who left kind words or comments on this piece. I've been away for awhile and that's the reason I didn't reply to all of them personally and in a more timely fashion.

I've been pretty sick most of this month. If it's not one cold it's another and I'm starting to forget what it's like to actually feel healthy! So that's the main reason I've been absent from Eeps the past few weeks.

I'm done with my work on The Terminal, at least until reshoots start up in January. If you live in Canada (not sure where, sorry) the production has moved north for December to shoot exteriors. I hear they have some really big 1000 people calls coming up while they're there. Might be a rumor, but if you're in the area, maybe worth looking into.

As for the short film I did with my friend Jeremy...

That is still in post production, and last I talked with Jeremy about it, he was hoping to have a completed film done sometime in January. It may be awhile before it's seen on a festival level, but I promise I'll keep people posted through my profile page.

As for my screenwriting...

I'm diving into two new collaborations this week, and plan to emerge from the winter months with a solid project under my belt. Either one of the two collaborations, or one of my many full length's. I'm also still doing rewrites on a short script that I completed this past summer.

Thanks again for the comments. Take care! ~Ryan

It's so nice to hear how things are going for out in Hollywood, even if they haven't all been rosy days over the past four years. Too often I forget that with all of the people I've gotten to "know" here at Epinions, I only know them in the most abstract sense. It's the pieces like these that remind me how real all the myriad contributers to the site are.

I'll definitely keep my eyes on the festival circuit next years, in hopes of seeing your new short film. Hopes everything continues to pick up for you...

Ryan, What a wonderful heartfelt review of the last 4 years. It moved me to tears. You have a real skill for writing and the world will be better off if you can share that skill. I hope you stay focused on the writing and somehow find a way to get your ideas and your wonderful talent out there with the masses. This peice will likely serve as a great litmus test for others faced with difficult choices about life and LA. Please keep writing...whereever you live. JQZ

This was quite inspiring. It's perfectly done, and I love it! It's so real. Great job. Let me know when (yes, when) your film makes it to Film Festivals, and I will definitely check it out. As for The Terminal, I will be looking forward to see you in it, too (oh yeah, and that other guy... what's his name... Tim Hanks?).

Once again, great piece. With the way you wrote it, its hard to believe that it's non-fiction!

Thanks Tom. I guess it's not that things aren't working out, it's just that Los Angeles in general is a brutal place to exist, especially if you aren't aspiring to be the most crooked crook on the block. But things are o.k. in my life, generally speaking. I am surrounded by a ton of really great people and I wouldn't give any of them up for the world.

Thanks for the support!

The Movie is called The Terminal and is tentatively scheduled for a June release date. I'm playing a "Brookstone employee" and can be seen at the end of the film running to hand Tom a gift. I'm the one holding the Brookstone bag. For those who don't know, Brookstone is a store at the mall and the film takes place inside an airline terminal with a mall in it. .....let us know the name of the movie with Tom Hanks. We'll get to see you in person!

I lived in So California for almost 50 years and have to say, that I'm glad to be living in the midwest now and in a small town. Of course being older made me yearn for a simpler quieter life.

You keep following those dreams.....and watch out for guys with guns! They aren't hunting deer out there. .......kath

Unfortunate to hear things aren't so perfectly, but good to hear they're perking up. I wish you the best.
