The Bottom Line Amazon.com is excellent for finding specialty books, videos and music that can often be previewed (cd's) or purchased used at a very low cost.

I began using Amazon.com in order to purchase last minute presents for family and friends when my work schedule and tendency toward procrastination left me desperate and gift-less. I found it extremely easy to navigate, find, buy and mail products quickly across the country, and since it saved me from driving/parking/dealing with crowds/wrapping/mailing, etc. I soon began using it a great deal.
I have ordered wonderful specialty videos for my mother-in-law, hard to find import comedy CD's for my old college roommate, children's chess videos for my husband's elementary school classroom, music concert videos for my nephew, and even a humorous street sign that features the unusual breed of dog owned by my mother! I am happy to find gifts that reflect such diverse interests.
However, I have come to discover that my favorite parts of Amazon.com are the used products, and the ability to preview and listen to music.
As an English teacher, I read and buy many books. However, as an English teacher, my budget for buying books is limited. I have been thrilled to be able to find used products on Amazon.com for all the books that I have needed lately. These include titles that I never would have expected to find used, such as a particular compilation of one-act plays I recently needed. All the books I bought in this manner arrived quickly without any difficulty and look brand new; and there is usually a cheery note of thanks enclosed from the seller that makes it an even more pleasant transaction.
Because I love music (used to be a D.J.) I also buy my share of CD's. Whereas I used to love previewing CD's at listening stations in music stores, I find that unless the particular CD is chosen by the store as one of the pieces to preview, I cannot listen to anything I want to. In addition, I am furious that you can no longer return CD's to any music store once they are opened (due to CD-copying). The result of this is that I have been stuck with buying many terrible (and expensive) CD's that I can only return for a fraction of the price I paid. Infuriating.
However, I have been very happy that through Amazon.com I can listen to many tracks on CD's that are off the beaten track. This has either kept me from buying something horrible or enabled me to buy something I never would have tried "blind".
I know that there are other places on the internet where one can find and buy used books, and where one can listen to music, and perhaps these other sites are much better than what is at Amazon.com. However, for what I need and what I do online, I have been very pleased and happy with these services and plan to continue using Amazon.com in the future.
