I recently went on a backpacking/canoeing trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (see reviews here on epinions.com). I had always wanted to go backpacking, and this was my first adventure in doing so. As you could imagine, there were a lot of things I needed to purchase in preparation for the trip, but this was half the fun!
REI.com made shopping pretty simple for me. Usually I knew what I wanted before I got to the site, but at times when I was unsure, REI's detailed product descriptions and large, detailed photos helped me make-up my mind. On clothing items, sometimes they did not have an image of every color option of a particular item, but that is the case at several online retailers.
My only minor gripe about REI.com is that they did not automatically provide an order tracking/shipping number. I'm one of those types who always has to know where my order is and when it will be at my house! I had to email the customer service department, which responded in less than 12 hours with an order tracking/shipping number and a link to UPS.com where I could track my order. Perhaps they will incorporate order tracking automatically in the future.
Another thing that could improve their site is customer reviews on the products they offer. When I found a product I liked on their website, I usually went to other sources (outdoorreview.com, epinions.com, etc.) to get actual user reviews of the products to see if they would be worth my purchase.
Other than those few issues, REI.com is an easy shopping experience and is fun to use. I check on them often to see what's on sale. For an even bigger bargain, check out their sister site: REI-Outlet.com. Happy Shopping!
