About Me: I drink a lot of Dr. Pepper because it's good for life.

This vacuum sucks literally!!!

Written: Aug 13 '01 (Updated Aug 13 '01)
Pros:True HEPA filtration, bagless, long power cord, good wheels
Cons:The vacuum is fairly large in width and weight
The Bottom Line: I certainly don't regret my choice. According to some of these other opinions my recommendation might change once I've owned it longer but right now I'm very pleased.

Decision Making
I am recently married and my wife and I registered for a vacuum cleaner as most couples do. Since my wife finds appliances boring and simply uses them without caring about any special features, I was given free reign to pick whatever I wanted. Having seen the ads on T.V. I went right to the Fantom Fury and added it to our registry.

My in-laws informed me upon seeing the price of the thing that I should pick something else.

I wasn't convinced but I decided I would look at my other options so I went to Best Buy. When I asked the lady there about the Fantom Fury she said that they had had quite a few returned and that she did not recommend it. She said to get a Hoover, Dirt Devil or Eureka vacuum instead (in that order).

I went to the web then and looked at the features and ratings of each brands bagless vacuum and decided on the Eureka Whirlwind Bagless Cyclonic. I knew I wanted bagless because my parents owned one of the first bagless vacuums (made by Amway) and I knew the joy of simply dumping out a little canister and occasionally rinsing off the fittings to ensure that things were clear.

So, at one of our wedding showers my wife's grandparents gave us the Eureka.

First Impression
The Eureka then spent about three months in it's box waiting to be assembled and used. We recently moved into our new home and got a chance to see what our little vacuum was like. First of all, putting this thing together is so easy, most grandparents could do it, I was pleasantly surprised. Now that we have used the vacuum several times I must say that we are very pleased.

Features
The vacuum has an integral headlamp that I thought was a total novelty but now that I've used it I have seen that it really does brighten its path, even if the room lights are already on. The vacuum has a two-stage tilt so that it can lower way down to get into really deep spaces (although its thickness keeps it out of particularly tight places). I have found that for my brand-new carpet the third height setting works the best and thus far it has not become clogged from beating out the new carpet fuzzies another reviewer complained about. The cord is long enough, not terribly long but not short by any means.

Usage Note
From my previous experience with a bagless vacuum it is important to never let the dirt cup fill up past the halfway mark.

Unique Features
One interesting design element is the wheels. Until I used it I could not figure out why the wheels half-spheres instead of being normal cylinders, they looked strange. Then as I was using it I bumped them into a piece of furniture that my wife really loves. I bent down right-away expecting to see some sort of dent or scratch but the rounded wheels hadn't left a mark. Also, although this has become a fairly common feature, the handle in the middle of the back makes carrying the thing a breeze.

Conclusion
I haven't found any fault in this vacuum so far and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive, super cleaning vacuum.
