First, I was a Blockbuster hater. Before the online thing started, their business practices were a complete ripoff, particularly the late fee structure. I started a Netflix account and spent a year with Netflix, pretty much happy with the service and selection. I decided to give Blockbuster Online a try and spent six months comparing both services. Blockbuster consistently averaged about TWO days in the mail each way, while Netflix was nearly always ONE day in the mail each way. (I'm a fanatic, sorry to say, so I actually had this charted on an Excel spread sheet!)
By the end of six months, I was about to give the award to Netflix and cancel Blockbuster. Until...
Blockbuster changed their plan, and allowed returns of DVDs to the store. Upon returning the DVD to the store, it would be checked in online and the next item on your queue would be sent. ALSO, and that's a big also, you could trade the DVD for a movie from the store. Both at the same time. Not one or the other. Both. Therefore, a new one is in the mail within 24 hours, and another goes home with you to be watched, and only one of the movies has counted against the total that you can receive from your queue (depending on your plan, whether it's one, two, or three at a time).
I dropped Netflix.
Now, the problem with Blockbuster is that they still don't have the most obscure of titles, and they don't offer any NC17 movies (although they do *wink *wink have Not-Rated movies, which basically replace most NC17 titles). So, I reactivated my Netflix account just for a few dozen movies not carried by Blockbuster. Strangely, perhaps because of the obscurity of my movie choices, Netflix has become very sloooowwww. Their turnaround has turned into 5 days each way ten days from the time I turn in a movie until the next arrives, usually shipped from other parts of the U.S.
I think Blockbuster is a great deal if you have one of their stores nearby.
