MOMMA MIA'S TOP TEN RECENT COMEDIESNov 14 '03 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The trick to comedy is a parody of real life, things we can relate to. If you can relate to it then most likely you will find it amusing. 10.) LIFE OF BRIAN (MONTY PYTHON'S) Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam WHY? Do I have to give a reason? If you don't get it, maybe you just shouldn't! SUMMARY~ Brian of Nazareth was born in the manger next to Jesus on Christmas Eve. He manages to end up in places that anyone familiar with the Bible will recognize. People are still angry over this one.You have to laugh at something that everyone takes so seriously. KIDS wont get this or it will confuse them, there is even some nudity. Keep this one for when they are in their teens. BEST SCENE~large group standing on a hill listening to Jesus; JESUS: blessed are the meek... GREGORY: Could you be quiet, please? What did he say? (TO PEOPLE NEAR BY) JESUS: ...who hunger and thirst to see... MAN #1: I think it was 'Blessed are the cheesemakers.' JESUS: ...right prevail. MRS. GREGORY: Ahh, what's so special about the cheesemakers? GREGORY: Well, obviously, this is not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products. MR. CHEEKY: See? If you hadn't been going on, we'd have heard that, Big Nose. 9.) FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH WHY? Everyone has been in high school at one time. You know everyone of these people. The wanna be jock, the stoner, the slut, the princess, the guy that has to work 80 hours a week to go to college, the nerd, the brain. Its like watching your own memories. **I forgot how dirty this movie was until I bought the DVD and put it in with friends present, 20 minutes in we all red faced but laughing anyway. Not recommended for children. SUMMARY~ A peek into the lives of high school students and American kids across the country. You know them, you love them..hell, you are them! Watch the movie, thats all I can say really. BEST SCENE~ Judge Reinhold flirting with Nancy Heart at the traffic light in his pirate work uniform! 8.) HAPPY GILMORE - Adam Sandler, Frances Bay, Ben Stiller, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers, Bob Barker, Lee Trevino WHY? ADAM SANDLER and some of the most ridiculous images you have ever seen. Think Happy's Grandma in a Gene Simmon's Kiss mask. The casting was great, comedy perfect and scenes ridculous. Look for Bill Murray in a very brief stand in cameo as Happy's caddy (he is dressed in the caddy's costume) in one of the last scene's. Also Ben Stiller as the nurses aid in Grandma's old folks home. He plays the part a little too well. Dark comedy, violence and foul language makes this one questionable. There is a fair amount of sexuality. SUMMARY~ Sandler plays Happy Gilmore a kid that has wanted to a hockey player as long as he can remember. He discovers that he can hit a golf ball 400+ yards and uses this skill to try and save Grandma's house from the IRS. BEST SCENE~ Sandler bangs on Grandma's window air conditioner trying to fix it. It falls out and lands on a patient that bears a striking resemblance to Karen Black. She screams up to him, "Mr! Mr! Get this thing off me!" 7.) THE MEXICAN - Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Gene Hackman, James Gandolfini WHY? Brad Pitt is an in the closet comic. What did you think I was going to say?! Anyway this movie shows his ability while not show-casing it. The plot is clumsy in places. It has very genuine laugh out loud moments. It blended so well the elements of mystery, comedy, cat and mouse and romance. Gandolfini as a gay hit man is worth the rental price. I even squeezed a few tears at the end. One question~Why didnt you clean the blood off the seat Jerry, WHY? SUMMARY~ Jerry owes a mob boss bigtime. He is given one final job and his debt is paid. Find "The Mexican" a priceless piece of Mexican folklore. A cursed pistol. Bring it back to Margolis and you are done. Julia is Jerry's girlfriend, Samantha, she knows that he is a screw up, she loves him anyway. When she feels things arent going the way she wants she gives him an ultimatum. He says that he has to do one last job. She bolts for Vegas, he for Mexico. She is kidnapped by Gandolfini, who is trying to insure that Jerry comes back with the pistol. Everyone in Mexico trys to steal the pistol from Jerry. He finds the pistol and tries to return only to discover that things are not what they seemed! **I enjoyed seeing the many different versions of the legend surrounding the gun. The true version of course being the most touching. This one is questionable for kids. There is some violence, slight sexuality. Lots of foul language. I would say that its okay for 13 and up. BEST SCENE~ The Desert/Eye for an Eye Jerry has kidnapped the man that has stolen his car and taken him into the desert. Jerry: "I am not going to kill you but I am going to have to shoot you." Thief: "No, no please..just tie me up some more!" Jerry: "I dont have anymore rope." Thief: "So you shoot me!!??" Jerry: "That's the American way. Now where do you want it?" Thief: doesnt move, no reply Jerry: "Okay." Points gun at the theif's leg. Thief: "NO! No, not the leg! There are arteries, I could bleed to death in mere seconds!" Jerry: "Okay the foot then!" Thief: "No! You could blow off a toe." Jerry: "The foot is fair, it'll hurt but it will heal. Okay, on three....." Jerry points the gun, counts...."One..." Shoots the guy in the foot, guess he thought the element of suprise was best. 6.) FRIDAY- ICE CUBE, CHRIS TUCKER Directed by F. Gary Gray.Ice Cube wrote the film. I think that this is THE movie for people that use marijuana. In the 70's/80's it was Cheech and Chong, now this is the one to see. It has an easy to follow plot and some very genuine comedy. It shows situations that occur in neighborhoods across the country everyday that anyone can associate with. Anyone that has had a bad day, crazy friends or mean parents can sympathize. Not recommended for children due to sexuality, foul language and the incredible ammount of drug references. SUMMARY~ Craig (CUBE) has been fired from his job on his day off. He and his pal Smokey (TUCKER) decide to spend their Friday hanging out on Craig's front porch. Various characters cross their paths over the course of the day. Look for Bernie Mac as the sneaky Reverand and F. Gary Gray in a cameo as the mopping store clerk. Also Nia Long, Cube's co-star in Boyz in the Hood. BEST SCENE~ Smokey hates Hector and Craig asks why? Smokey explains that he smoked once with Hector and his pals. Smokey didnt know the joint was laced with angel dust. In flash back form you see Smokey and Hector in his car, Smokey hits the joint. Hector tries to warn him to take it easy but he barks, "I know what I am doing man, I am the Smoke Dog!" He then starts to tick and squirm. Then he is running down the street in his underwear, rolling and crawling only to end up in a pigeon coop, making pigeon noises, where he says only his Mama could get him to come out. Flash back to present time, he tells Craig, "Man! I aint never been right since!" You see Smokey start to twitch and then scratch his shoulder, looking aroung like a maniac. I fell off the couch laughing. 5.) WAYNE'S WORLD -Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Tia Carrere, Rob Lowe, Donna Dixon, Lara Flynn Boyle WHY? Mike Myers as the well intentioned stoner Wayne is a character than all of us either knows or has been at some point in our lives. Dana Carvey's Garth is a delight. A sweet goofy sidekick without a mean bone in his body, all he wants is a woman to love him. SUMMARY~ Wayne and Garth have a public TV show that runs from Wayne's basement. They talk about music and chicks. What else is important to two guys that live at home? A major cable company wants to buy the show and totally take over. The story is weak at times but the comedy is fantastic. We all know Mike Myers is a genius. Tia Carrere is great as his rocker girlfriend. Rob Lowe is perfect as the sneaky network guy that wants to steal Wayne's show and his woman. Watch for Lara Flynn Boyle pre-anorexia, pre-collagen lip job role as his psycho ex that just cant let go. I think this is okay for kids, there is some sexuality but most of it is tame. Light on the foul language. **Plenty of cameo's including Chris Farley and one of the guys from Slaughter as the guitar salesman that shows Wayne the "No Stairway to Heaven" sign. BEST SCENE~ The diner, when Garths love interest walks in (Donna Dixon, Dan Akroyd's wife) and the music starts playing, her hair is blowing, The effect it has on Garth is worth the purchase price alone. 4.) OFFICE SPACE WHY? If you have ever worked in an office you will own this movie, it almost a documentary it is so dead on. Its the story of Peter, who just cant take it anymore. His entire life is the exact opposite of what he wants and the biggest problem is his job. His fiance makes him go to see a shrink that will help him relax through hynosis. The shrink dies mid-session and he is left with a sense of complete relaxation. He doesnt care about work at all anymore. He comes and goes as he please, with hilarious results. His fiance breaks up with him and life turns upside down. In walks dream girl Jennifer Aniston with a brief peek into the life of waitress's (which could have been an entire movie in itself) and things are actually looking up for him. Soon his imbittered coworker pals are fired, while he is promoted. They hatch a sceme to steal pennies on the dollar and things go nuts. Watch them try to figure a way out. Keep an eye out for the guy with the stapler and the guy with the O face. Remember folks, there is a minimum on flare! No one wants to do the bare minimum! Not recommended for children due to the foul language, violence and sheer nonsense they wont understand or be interested in anyway. BEST SCENE~ The destruction of the fax machine. Period. 3.) TOMMY BOY WHY? Chris Farley, that's why! Yes David Spade is great as his sidekick but Farley was at his peak in this movie. His portrayal of Tommy is dead on. He is the guy that we all know. He is born to a hard working father and some how comes out a total loser, spends 7 years in college, then returns to his small home town. How does this happen? SUMMARY~ Tommy Callahan has just graduated from college. He comes home and discovers Dad is marrying MILF Bo Derek, Dad crokes on his wedding day. Tommy has to sell a million brake pads to save his Dad's company. He hits the road with Spade. They make the sales, eventually but the trip is what makes the movie golden. Watch for Rob Lowe as the mean spirited snake of a stepbrother. This one is okay for kids also, there are some minimal drug references. Slight sexuality and some foul language but nothing too offensive. BEST SCENE~ The fight scene between Spade and Farley. You think Farley is gonna kill Spade, think again! BEST LINE~ Spade knocks Tommy for a loop and a rolly eyed Farley says, "If I wanted a kiss I woulda called your Mama!" **second best line~ The Restaraunt Farley: "Is there something wrong with my face? Cause it really hurts." He points to his face, "Not so much here (temple), not so much here (jawline), right here!" (giant purple bruise across his cheek) Spade: "No, nothing." Waitress walks up and says, "Oh my god, what happened to your face?" 2.) SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (AKA: Farrelly brothers GOLD!) -Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Lin Shaye, Chris Elliott and of course Brett Favre WHY? Ben Stiller is the perfect person for the rold of Ted, a sweet guy looking for the one girl that stole his heart in high school, by looking past his dorky exterior and seeing the great guy behind the braces. SUMMARY~ Cameron Diaz is Mary, the girl you either want to be or want to marry. After meeting Mary while defending her brother Warren they agree to go to the Prom together. One of the most famous scenes in comedy history follows. We all know it, "Franks and Beans!" Ted losses tack of Mary and we fast forward to twenty years in the future. He just cant get over her. He has a P.I. look her up, the P.I. decides to keep her for himself and gives Ted false info. Ted decides to look her up anyway, proving he is a keeper. The path he takes, the situations that follow and the resolution are comedic gold. There are more cameos than you can shake a stick at (noteably Harland Williams and Brett Favre) and this is a classic. We will be talking about it in 50 years. Plenty of dirty jokes, some foul language and a few nude or close to nude shots. Not recommended for kids. BEST SCENE~ Magda's raisin boobs! 1.) YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN -Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Terri Garr WHY? Gene Wilder as Frederick Frankenstein is superb. His dead pan comedy is wonderful and amazing. His portrayal of the young Dr. Frankenstein is probably the best of his career. This movie is filled with perfect performances. The late great Madeline Kahn as Wilder's fiance Elizabeth. Terri Garr as the bumbling, bimbo assistant Inga, Peter Boyle as the Monster, Leachman's Frau Blucher is grotesque and yet somehow arrousing. Mel Brooks makes a very brief cameo. My FIVE STAR award goes to Marty Feldman who made the movie, with anyone else in this part the movie would not have nearly as good. His portrayal of Igor is comic genius. SUMMARY~ The young doctor Frankenstein ( pronounced Frahnk-in-steen) has inherited a castle from his deceased Uncle, the late Dr. Victor Frankenstein. He travels to the castle and meets a very interesting cast of characters. There is strange Igor, lovely Inga and the overbearing Frau. Then he discovers the experiments that his Uncle was working on and that it might actually work! He is incised, he has discovered and excepted his true past. He creates the Monster. Uproarious comedy insues. He tries to teach it to behave, not knowing that the Monsters basic instincts over ride all else! Watch for Gene Hackman! There is a fair amount of sexuality, very slight foul language, small amount of violence. Okay for kids over 13. BEST SCENE~ When the Doctor notices Igor's hump, the camera pans away then back and the hump is on the other side. The Doctor says, "Wasn't that on the other side?" Feldman just looks at him and then the camera and shrugs questioningly, perfect! **second best scene~ When Igor picks the Doctor up from the train station, he takes his bags and then tells the Doctor "Walk this way." Wilder looks at the camera then turns and limps away in the same grotesque manner as Igor. |
