There are many things for the new user to learn here at Epinions. How to write your first review. How to find your way past those silly 'express reviews'. How to find your comfort level in writing here at Epinions. Comfort in content, in attitude, in style, in length. These Member Advice sections are full of wonderful pieces from users pitching in with their thoughts about what 'to do' or 'not to do' to find fame and fortune and fun here at Epinions.

Epinions dot com has their corporate vision of what constitutes a 'Very Helpful' review:
"Very Helpful: The review is exceptionally accurate, contains a significant amount of useful information about the subject, and is very well presented."
Many users take these words to heart. The new user—writing their short, inspired, heart-felt review—will often be told 'You need to add more content'. Or 'Talk some more about (this)'. Or 'Tell us about that feature.'
Indeed, I have done this myself, gently reminding new writers here to 'use some words (they are free!)'
Unfortunately, many of us soon become accustomed to hearing ourselves 'talk'. We love to share our every thought about a product, every nuance we detect in a book or movie or song or computer or camera or lotion. While Epinions dot com does want each review to 'contain a significant amount of useful information' they also want that information to be 'very well presented.'
Some times we forget that the exceptionally long (scadfully long) review might detract from the main points we are trying to share with our readers. That writing to 'hear ourselves talk' might not be 'very well presented', that is, 'Very Helpful'.
I am issuing a challenge to each new writer here at Epinions dot com.
• First: To move beyond the 20 to 200 words now required to have your review(s)
published as an 'express review' here.
• Second: To write a 'regular review', a product review, that garners an overall rate
of 'Very Helpful'. Without exceeding 666 words in length.
• Third: To participate, perhaps, in your first 'write-off' here at Epinions. Write-offs
have a long and storied history here at Epinions.
• Fourth: To enjoy the time you spend here on Epinions.
I presented this challenge to all users of Epinions.com in November of 2002.
'Lean-n-mean' One challenged all writers to do exactly what I outlined above.
I do so again here. Challenge all users to join you in writing a 'lean-n-mean' product review, that is.
Ten product reviews selected randomly from 'Lean-n-mean One' averaged 484 words in length. Each was rated 'Very Helpful' overall. A check of the last product review of these 10 users/writers show these averaged over 1200 words in length. Nearly two and one-half times as long.
Perhaps it is time for some users to challenge themselves to write 'lean-n-mean' again.
