Heed Howard's Words at Epinions.com (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara
Howard,
I came back today to read this review (again) and wanted to re-discover your opinion on the world's finest digital SLR. It made me wonder how Canon D60 and EOS 1Ds users will feel when they get their hands on what is supposed to be a 11.1 MP wonder. Obviously, Canon just raised the stakes and now we all wonder, "how will Nikon match Canon's latest?"
One of the main considerations will be cost because the new Canon is reported to hit the street at $8 grand. The Canon is also slower than their own sister digital SLRs and both the Nikon D1X and D1H.
So, time will tell and digital imaging technology will continue to obsolete itself in record time. Then again, the journey of discovery is always more than half the fun.
Thanks again for a fully thought out, professional and all-inclusive review.
Cheers,
Paul Connors

Thanks for your kind comments. The image was shot "for pay" and belongs to the Bride and Groom who contracted for the photos. I hope to one day to have a site that will feature some of my images, but I am having trouble finding the time to do the work required to do it right. Howard

Is there anywhere that we could get a look at the picture of the little girl flying through the air? That sounds like such a cool picture that I wish there was some way we could all see it...

Howard,
I was VERY pleased to see that you continue as THE guru for electronics under the new Epinions recognition system. You reviews are consistently FIRST RATE, and I'm glad you've continued to be recognized for your professional style contributions.
I'm also glad that Epinions now has a "most helpful" rating - since I always wished for a higher rating that I could bestow on your terrific contributions.
Well done, Sir....!
BRAVO....!

Picture Perfect (Reply to this comment)

...and perfect (the descriptions of landscape, followed by the triumph of a "keepsake" shot of the family's first act together as a unit at the wedding) review to commemorate your 2nd year milestone here at Epinions. Yet, I confess, I've come to expect such vivid details of places, people and events from you! (See, you've gone and spoiled me)
It just wouldn't have been the same here without you, Howard. You've made my tenure here beautiful with your special style of reviewing everything from a landmark restaurant/pub/theatre to the highest resolution video camera or the top-of-the-line (and price range, too) camera which, without fail, makes reading your reviews the greatest of pleasures.
Congratulations and happy anniversary, "old" friend. Let's go for three. As always,
Rouchelle

Is this what you call a review? (Reply to this comment)
by quadophile
Howard,
It was not a review, you wrote a novel on this baby! I did not realise how many words, sentences, or paragraphs I was going to read, until I finally reached the end. I use Nikon gear and I know what it is like to use and own these babies. Nikon is a company dedicated to the USER. Nikon does not design cameras, the photographers do, they just listen.
I actually am rating this as VVH!
A marathon effort I must say!

here I was, all ready after reading your title to leave a comment about 'the best digital cameras are professional ones, the silly consumer version you're reviewing doesn't add up'
And you're reviewing a professional one.
you got me.

Howard, these essays of yours are far and away more than the typical efforts we see in this forum. I hope you are preparing to publish them in a more mature medium.

...we are all the richer for having read, rated and reacted to your offerings.
...as to "best" digital camera, I don't know enough except to take your various observations on this one and others on faith...but at that price it damn well better be, or darn close.
cheers,

The remarks on the Bernheim Forest were great. Sounds like a wonderful place to visit. Camera is too steep a price for me though. Congrats on your two year anniversary!

A Camera review I Could Love! (Reply to this comment)
by kcfoxy
Howard,
First of all, we are very lucky to have had a writer of your caliber stick around Epinions.com for 2 whole years. Fabulous! And points up your dedication and commitment to this site.
Next, I was thrilled to see a human interest story wrapped into a Camera Review. Absolutely on topic in terms of pointing up the camera's capabilities...and that priceless candid of the little ring girl will probably win first place in Parade Magazine's contest, provided they have a slot for Professional entries. I'm sure you know of other suitable sites, as well.
Often, as a present to the married couple, I would shoot 3 or 4 rolls of plain old grab shot crowd candids with my trusty Canon. Strictly amateur, but I liked this better than giving the ubiquitous toaster or blender, and always got a bevy of unusual material. I am somewhat proud to say that at least 80-90% of these were keepers!
It was interesting to read about the look you were going for, as this sounded like just perfect for archival wedding pictures. I was able to breeze right over the stuff that confounds my brain, but recognize this as the details more avid shutterbugs will race to, for bottom line/performance matters.
And the lovely woodland respite was the crowning touch, the lagniappe which is your generous trademark. And so apt, as I sit here enjoying an echinacea (purple cone flower) supplement drop!
Congratulations again on your anniversary!

I'm in the market for a new digital camera. I was all set to buy this one...until I saw the price! It sounds like a great camera...just a little out of my price range. However, I did enjoy your informative review. Great, as always.
