The Territory Ahead offers casual clothes and accessories for men and women. My review covers the men's apparel and the web site in general.
The Products
This store's motto is Clothes for the Journey. The style is outdoor casual. Sort of like a designer L.L. Bean or Eddie Bauer. The prices are not cheap and are similar to other designer labels such as Ralph Lauren. In general, the prices are reasonable. However, there are occasional internet specials with reduced prices. All the items are designed for the Territory Ahead and can be found no where else. Very interesting for such a relatively small store. What is also interesting is that the products change frequently, sometimes every season.
Most of the color choices are earth tones, brown, green, rust, blue-grey, etc., keeping with the outdoor theme. These are outdoor clothes in the sense that outdoors is when you put the top down on your convertible and drive down to the shopping mall. The size selection is good. They had shorts in the hard to find 35 in. waist size. Most shirts and coats are available in S, M, L, XL, and XXL.
What first brought me to this site was my search for a leather jacket. They have three or four models all in the $280 to $350 range. I was originally looking for a jacket similar to an A-2 Army flight jacket, a G-2 Navy flight jacket (both replicas of 1930's military issue) or an "Indiana Jones" style which is a modified A-2. There are actually several of the Indiana Jones styles designed specially for each of the the films. They are still extremely popular and are available on many web sites. To complete your outfit there are web sites that sell Indiana Jones hats and whips! But back to the review of this store before I go too far off topic.
In the end I ordered their version of a classic bomber jacket and I am very pleased with it. They also have several non-leather coats and jackets, shoes, shorts, sweaters, belts, and travel bags. But no whips, sorry!
The Web Site
A good web site that has all the basics. You can check availability and order status. Ordering uses secure SSL ordering. There is an 800 telephone number for customer service. There is only one shipping option, which is USPS or UPS 3 to 5 day. Shipping rates start at $4.95 for $25 or less. International shipping is available. They have a good 100% return policy, though I have never used it.
Site navigation is simple and has links directly from a subject type table of contents. When you click on a product type a new page opens up with a mini-picture of each selection. A click on this opens up a product description with a larger picture, availability info, and a size selection pulldown menu. Checkout is fast and simple. Member registration is available but not required. There is a search engine, but you probably won't need it with the limited selection.
They also have a very good printed catalog which you can request. You can order items that appear only in the printed catalog online by entering the product number. The catalog has a few additional items that don't show up online, but not that many. There are also some retail stores in California.
One of my orders was out of stock. They sent me a postcard with the expected delivery date and I eventually got it when they said I would. My other orders were on time, 3 or 4 business days.
The Overall Rating
Four stars because of the quality and unique style of the products despite the limited number of items. No problems with the few orders I have purchased from this site.
