The Bottom Line: Very good camera, although, consider going to the Mini-DV formate for this price, it is the format of the future! Digital-8 will fade out soon...
I had this camera at the display in my store for a while before I took a close look at it, and I was like, woah, 1 Megapixel on a Digital 8 Camera? Hard to believe! Last year the DCRTRV720 model had a big screen, and still only about .6 megapixels, which is what most of the Digital 8 Camera's run on. This extra .4 megapixels is barely noticeable when viewing playback on a television under 27", but above, it is noticeable. Also, in computer-video editing there is a difference in picture quality when converting the Digital 8 into Quicktime movies, and so forth. The average Joe will not need this camera, for this price, I suggest a Mini-DV camera, perhaps the DCRTRV17, but if you have tons of 8 mm tapes, and you want to convert them to your computer, this is the tool for you! The camera, like all Digital 8 and mini-DV cameras will act as a Analog to digital converter so you can put in your old 8 mm tapes and turn them into Video-CDs which can be played on your DVD player! So many people don't think of doing this, but it is one the greatest things to do, I do it in my spare time for people as a side-job. The demand is incredible, as well as the referrals I receive. I tell them, buy a Digital 8 camera and do it yourself! They say they aren't tech savy, but it does not really take that much to do. If you can manage to burn your own music CD you can manage this. Also new is the USB connection which is blazing fast compared to the Serial port connection of last year's models. What a drag those were!! Don't gripe about the 4 mb mem stick, all capable Sony camcorders come with it, only the 2.1 and 3.1 sony digitai-still cameras come with 8mb. You can easily purchase more, which is what Sony wants you to do. The battery is adequete, but always have a backup, you never know!
