Hey (Reply to this comment)
by grez
Just wanted to throw my two cents' worth in too...
I agree with the first Creed album being good (don't know if I'd personally put it in the top 50 of the 90's, but that's beside the point), which is probably surprising to most people because I really can't stand that band. But, when they were still vaguely independent and not tempted into formula by record sales, they actually recorded some good songs. Go figure.
I can't agree on the second Candlebox album, especially not placing in the top 50. I have to say that I thought it was pretty awful. While we're at it, I've never been able to get into Bush (stop the jokes that phrase inherently warrants before they start) as a band, but if any work of theirs deserves a spot, it would be this first album. I do have to admit to liking Everything Zen and Little Things on occasion. I just liked a lot of other bands in the early 90's/grunge era a lot better.
Huge props on including Pantera...VDOP is absolutely killer, and much overlooked due to the popularity of more radio-friendly bands in that day and age.
As for Zoocra...er, Zooropa, well...you know how I feel about that one, as you pointed out. Thanks for the shout-out. ;-)
Keep 'em comin', brotha.
Cheers,
Grez

Wow! I'm so happy and surprised by your choices so far and I almost totally agree. I'm just so happy that someone is finally giving credit to where credit is due with the bands and cds such as My Own Prison and 16Stone along with a great band and cd in Candlebox. I might make a list like this, but only if you say it's ok, because I don't want to drown your parade.
Great Review!

Great List (Reply to this comment)

I would definitely put NIN's Fragile higher...that's a great f*cking record. But I have no other comments because these are really interesting and thought provoking choices...
perhaps more once the rest of the list is revealed, eh?

My bet for #1... (Reply to this comment)
by divad23
I'm putting my money on Human Clay.
No, just kidding! Knowing you, it'll be something by Pearl Jam or the Bosstones. Or maybe Achtung Baby?
I'd do a list like this if only more of my favorites from that era were albums other people had actually heard.

Great job (Reply to this comment)

First off, kudos for including Zooropa (although I'd go with "pop" as the key word to define the album), Keep the Faith (my favorite and only BJ album I still listen to), and especially - for Nine Lives, THE Aerosmith album of the 90s!!!
A special thank you for including Garbage and dumping Nevermind.
Now, my bets:
The Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie or both (which would be better)
Pearl Jam: Yield, Vitalogy (since Ten is absent..)
NIN: Downward Spiral (come on)
U2: All that You can't Leave Behind (hope, hope, hope), Achtung baby (ok, you may call me a prophet)
Counting Crows: August and Everything After (don't know about your opinion, but on my list this album kicks a*rse)
Ozzy: No More Tears (just trying to guess.. it's good stuff tho)
Radiohead: The Bends (should I say anything here, really?), Ok Computer (not sure about this one, but it was certainly more influential than our favorite)
Genesis: We Can't Dance (one of the early 90s greatest on my list.. again, I don't know what you think)
Oh well, guess I'm out of gas for the moment.. I'll definitely remember something by the time Part II is out. Keep rockin'
...and without saying - great job!

Since I know that Steven and Shelly will blow you lots of crap on that unmentionable five letter word band, I'll skip my thoughts on that :).
Much love to you for including my idol and some of her best work (Garbage - Garbage). Makes me wanna pull it out and listen to it.
Kristina
P.S. I guess I won't hold my breath for an NSYNC cd in this list...

I feel you on Collective Soul and I can respect the Creed inclusion, if not fully agree with it. Zooropa I'm kinda not keen on, considering I really really can't stand it, but props for not being so stuck on Achtung Baby that you dismiss any post-'91 U2 as experimental bullsh*t. Personally, I LOVE Pop.
Really looking forward to further installments...
Peace,

I know how you feel about 'Lucy', and about Creed on the whole, but just what is your problem with Collective Soul?

Obviously the 90s rock movement was the final bullet into the dying breed of hair metal being commercially viable, but it all started with Jane's Addiction, and to a lesser extent, the Crowes, and moved on further to the Nirvanas, the Pearl Jams, the STPs...there's a reason Jane's Addiction is considered to be one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years

I smell Pearl Jam a comin'...
Neat list, kudos for the cojones to include Creed. Still wouldn't put any Creed (or Bush, for that matter) above Ten or Nevermind, though. :) Lookin' forward to the rest!

I disagree with only a few of your choices, like when you said
"As bands like Jane's Addiction and The Black Crowes began to usher out the hair metal acts of the 1980s".
Much to my Disamy :(. I love Glam/Hair Metal which is probably the reason I'm not onboard the Pearl Jam Love Train. As I recall, Hair Metal was still very popular until Nirvana's "Nevermind" came out. Bands like Firehouse, Slaughter, Warrant, Skid Row, Poison, Nelson, Cinderella, and Motley Crue dominated MTV, As my collected copies of "Metal Edge" will attest ;) But you're right Grunge Murdered it.
You mentioned Aerosmith's "Nine Lives", but that one never did much for me,, they rocked out more than on "Get A Grip", but I'm a "Jaded" guy (Pardon the Pun) who's so distraught over the band I idolized (I used to prance around the room w/ the headband on pretending I was Steven Tyler) selling their souls for continued commercial success, the last great work they ever did was "Pump" IMO.
U2 "Zooropa" - I've always prefered "The Joshua Tree", guess you could say I'm old-fashioned, the experimental stuff didn't appeal much to me.
BUT, The rest of your choices I back fully, like Pantera "Vulgar Display Of Power", it's great you gave a True Blue, Stick to their Guns come hell or high water metal band some recognition.
And count me in, I liked Creed's first album!
Bon Jovi "Keep The Faith" was another good choice.
Anyways thanks for all the "Very Helpful" votes on my reviews, Glad you enjoy my work.
Cheers from a fellow Bostonian,
James

Candlebox's Lucy? Collective Soul? CREED?
Damn, what IS this world coming to?
Anyway, I love these kinds of lists. Maybe someday I'll get to one of my own. Or not ;)
Nice start, Matt.

There were some fairly good recordings made between, say, 1965-1974 also.
