Perhaps he figures he has no luck with Iraq or fighting terrorism, so he'll instead focus his effort on saving "marriage."
Well, here's hoping he's as successful "saving marriage" as he was with those other two endeavors...

I can't figure out what your governor means and why he picked 3000 for the length of history. The notion that "marriage" is between one man and one woman was contrary to the original teachings of Romney's own faith and polygamy was also rife in Old Testament instances within the span of 3000 years
We're the home of some good witch burning too - so I think Massachusetts really has come around - it just took several hundred years.
I don't know what Romney is thinking - while I'm sure he's playing this for political capital, polls in the state show everyone just about evenly split on whether or not the constitution should be amended to prevent gay marriage. It would seem to me to be a very precarious position, especially in such a socially liberal state (it's very odd - MA is very liberal socially, but seems very conservative fiscally - hence democratic legislatures and republican governors - who both tout their love of the gay community). Even now, Romney is trying to speak out of both sides of his mouth - oh gays deserve rights, but no they can't marry and so on. The latest buzz is that he is submitting a civil union bill to try to circumvent the court's decision.
No one really knows what's going to happen - it is going to be an interesting 180 days.

Interestingly Enough.. (Reply to this comment)

the decisions was made by a bunch of Republican-appointed judges. Is it a political ploy crafted to hurt Dean in the 2004 election? Probably. 2004 will be the dirtiest election in history. I stand by Dean's decision, and the decision of the judges in MA, even though it has no bearing on my life. It is the right thing to do.

The notion that "marriage" is between one man and one woman was contrary to the original teachings of Romney's own faith and polygamy was also rife in Old Testament instances within the span of 3000 years. Marriage was not a "sacrament" within Christianity during the first millennium C.E. and your Supreme Court is not forcing Mass. churches to consecrate same-sex unions only for the state to be even-handed and not force religious views of some on all (the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony having not been all that different from the Taliban, the state has overcome some of its historical heritage!).

I didn't even realize the Mass. Supreme Court was dealing with this. What a wonderful surprise
The case was argued ages ago (almost a year now) and the court had been reviewing the case since then. So pretty much everything and everyone had been laying low until the court finally decided. I had heard that most expected the court to rule this way - but I didn't believe it until the court actually did.
And I hope your prediction is current - the vile homophobes and bigots are on their way out the door...

Thank you for writing about this important subject. Somehow this wonderful news hit me out of left field. I didn't even realize the Mass. Supreme Court was dealing with this. What a wonderful surprise. Yes, I agree that backlash will be great, but (I believe) all that noise is just the "last gasp" of old-school, hard-line conservatives. Their time is coming quickly to an end -- but not soon enough...

What a wonderful mental picture you've painted for me! Mitt and the rest of his smug overbearing intolerant right-wing buddies flailing around in a sea of hypocrisy, unable to stay afloat even with their red, white and blue water wings on around their flabby white biceps!
DROWN, BOYS, DROWN!

I was glad when I heard the news. I don't understand why all states don't allow this.
People that live together and love each other no matter their gender should have the right to the same protections that marriage gives to the rest of us.
I hope that someday people will get it and overcome their bias.

Mitt Romney and his ilk will be washed away in the storm that's coming
I sure hope so - he didn't get my vote last time and he sure won't get it now. And I plan on making sure that I can get as many other people to vote the same way.

Romney will not prevail. (Reply to this comment)

Mitt Romney is all ready to throw a wrench into the works with his vow to push for a Constitutional amendment to block gay marriages. I hope Massachusetts will stand up for what's right so the rest of the states will start falling in line. Justice must be served. Mitt Romney and his ilk will be washed away in the storm that's coming. They can splash around with their little water-wings but the tide is rising and they are going down.

I think he (Our Moron in Charge) has already issued some sort of statement saying that the decision was wrong. Perhaps he figures he has no luck with Iraq or fighting terrorism, so he'll instead focus his effort on saving "marriage."

that Dubyah and the religious right will have something to say about this. I just helped two friends celebrate 37 years together and they still don't have any rights. I wish that there was another way that would allow same-sex couples to have all the benefits that our hetero, quick to divorce, and move on to the next marriage citizens have. Well, maybe some day, but it will be too late for Chuck and Dick in Wisconsin. Hooray for Massachusetts.

Every silver lining has a cloud... (Reply to this comment)

I'm thinking that now, all of my friends who got "married" before it was really official will decide to have a second, "real" wedding to make it legal. And that means I have to buy another present for them. Sheesh. But there's no way I'm buying a new outfit -- they get one wedding outfit per couple, period. I'll wear the same damn thing again.
I don't see why I should have to spring for a couple more crystal vases or place settings just so my greedy gay friends can get their civil rights. Damn those liberal commie special interest groups.

Now we've just got to secure it, otherwise it's back to Vermont or Canada for weddings (and who wants to travel so far to have a wedding?).
