I ordered a Canon Speedlite 580EX flash and a DVD containing expanded instructions on the use of this flash unit. I then received multiple emails asking me to call a toll-free number to confirm my purchase. When I finally did call, I spoke to a representative who told me that I would be much better served by changing my order to a Sigma product, another flash unit. He stated that this flash unit was now "on sale" and that "for just a little more money" I could have a superior product. Among other things, he told me that the Sigma product had an "infrared sensor" which would "completely eliminate 'red-eye'". The latter statement sounded like balloon juice to me. I asked him for the model number of the Sigma product and told him I'd do some research and get back to him.
I found the Sigma unit for sale at Amazon.com for about $200 - - less than half the price of the Canon unit I wanted, which retails for nearly $500. I further found that Sigma products are, in general, "reverse-engineered" to emulate Canon products.
I called Express back. I told them to just ship me what I'd ordered. I asked if the Canon product originally specified were in stock. They assured me it was and agreed to fill the original order.
That was a couple of weeks ago. I haven't heard back.
Give these turkeys a pass.
