If you came upon a wedding dress hanging from a tree in the middle of the road somewhere in North Dakota, would you pause and wonder how it got there? Whether it had been worn in a wedding or had been tossed aside by a runaway bride? If it had breezed up into the branches or required a massive effort to turn the dress into a flag for passersby?
Pick up Julia's Chocolates and within a few pages, you'll understand why the white lace was destined for leafy last rites. Julia Bennett is fleeing the life she thought she wanted. A rich fiancee and great job push poverty and trailer homes into the distant past. A new life is within Julia's grasp. All she has to do is ignore her gut feelings, ratcheting in intensity as the wedding looms closer.
Finally heeding the inner voices that shatter the wedded bliss myth, Julia embarks on a road trip to Aunt Lydia's home in Oregon. Julia craves stability and comfort with the only family member she really trusts. Julia soothes her way across the country, snacking on a bag of her delicious chocolate creations.
Hiding out in Golden, Oregon from her ex-groom-to-be proves to be more of an adventure than Julia bargains for. Frugal Caroline, Minister's wife Lara, tired Katie and energetic Aunt Lydia make for bold Psychic Night meetings. Instead of playing cards or discussing a book of the month, the women meet weekly to celebrate a feminine body part. Special brownies, bottomless wine glasses and a psychic reading make for a wacky time.
Throughout Julia's time in the boonies, there is an undercurrent of stress - Julia knows her ex-fiancee will come after her for the humiliation she put him through at the altar. Despite the foreboding she feels, Julia forms many relationships and makes some new friends. Although men aren't allowed at Psychic Night meetings, Lydia's solid friend Stash and handsome lawyer Dean become part of Julia's circle of encouragement.
The Psychic Night ladies face many challenges. Illness, a lazy cheatin' spouse, disturbing visions and unrealistic expectations from Church members are hardships the group members face. Showing strength while facing problems teaches Julia about real community. In return, Julia's chocolate concoctions provide healing for all.
When Julia's past abruptly catches up with her, she has support in place to soften the fall. Revelations and growth are abundant in the last few pages. Without revealing the ending, it's fair to say that the key resonating themes are intact throughout: friends, passion, loyalty and healing. And of course, chocolate!
Cathy Lamb's first novel is heartfelt and passionate. The characters are so fully formed, it's difficult to say goodbye to them when the pages end.
