Urgh... ignore some of my stupider comments here (is stupider even a real word?!??!)), I don't know what I'm talking about half the time. Well, most of the time really...

Updated lists every few years? Probably a good idea... though I kinda regret doing this list at all, it's so impossible to choose ten films out of every genre and year ever, and I don't always agree with my own choices now (as you probably suspected...)

Your Top 10 (Reply to this comment)

Great list, though I wouldn't agree with many of the choices. Perhaps you should look into the European art house movement of the 50's and 60's (I think you may be the third epinioner I've pushed this on today).

Kubrick? Er... 2001? Hated it, I'm afraid.

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

I don’t even think she’s good looking!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Ok... I'm calm now.

along with two of his comedies, "Sabrina" and "We’re No Angels"

I'd also recommend watching BEAT THE DEVIL. It's not a great movie, but anything with Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre in it is worth watching.

fascinating.

To Have and Have Not is a great choice.

You know I question most of them.

Advice: See a lot more movies. Keep this around and write updated lists every few years.

Hey Lynne!

I think I may have to give the title of World's Biggest "Cutting Edge" fan to my wife and sister-in-law - they introduced me to it - by going on about it - and on - and on, and on... etc... (well you know what women are like!!!)

I'm going to look out for your list now - it's damn difficult, I can tell you! The moment I finished it I thought of a whole load of films that would also be worthy of mention...

Cheers,

Dave

Startling combination of films.... (Reply to this comment)
by quidrock

But I can't help but love it when someone else loves "To Have and Have Not" more than "Casablanca". I thought I might be the world's biggest fan of "The Cutting Edge", but perhaps you are. (I'd include it, too!) Missing are "Shawshank", "Henry V", "Rear Window" and "Glory".

Not sure what I'd move out...but "Medicine Man" would probably be on the list.

Anyway, your list, not mine. Well done!

My list would be significantly different, but I like how you chose yours, and there are some surprise picks - Medicine Man has always been a favorite of mine because of the subject matter (and the killer soundtrack). Hmmm, I might just have to write my own 'best of' list soon...

Nice review --

Hi Dave,
The only movie from this list that made my list was the Star Wars series, though I must say the Beautiful Mind and Lord of the Rings were close. Gladiator does make my list.

I haven't checked out half the movies in the list, I will check them out soon...

Cheers!

Hey there!

Well, I have a sensitive side and I'm not in the least ashamed of it.

I've seen S&S with Emma Thompson, it was good but I didn't feel it was as good as P&P. Still, different strokes, eh?

Thanks for the comment!

Gah! I'll give it back, and your Grim Fandango game too - I have been meaning to, honestly!

I love Cassablanca but I love "To Have and Have Not" marginally more, so that made it onto the list.

(If you notice I did at least mention Cassablanca... or did I? Can't remember now! - anyway just borrowed that along with Key Largo and The Big Sleep from my folks, but thanks anyway...)

Pride & Prejudice (Reply to this comment)

interesting for a man to put this one in his top 10 list. I loved this mini-series, but think Thompson's adaption of Sense & Sensibility was even better. Check it out if you have a chance!

You know, we have to get a few of those recognized classics your way. Now give me my Lord Of The Rings DVD back and I'll see what I can do. (hehehe)

Anyway, no Casablanca, Arghhhhhhhh!!! >:(

(Well you wouldn't have wanted a boring list of recognised classics, would you?!?? That would have been no fun at all!

You were supposed to use your ESP to read the rest of the sentence.

Since you obviously failed I've typed it out for you. < SIGH >

Good Grief! "A Beautiful Mind" took a while to grow on me, but I like it more than I did the first several times.

How many times have you seen it so far then? And how many times do you watch a film you actually like straight away?!!?!?!

Thanks,

Dave

Well I am a bit odd, you know. Which might explain things a bit...

Thanks for the corrections, your nerdiness. All should be present and correct now. (Even Joaquin Phoenix's full name, which escaped the notice of both yourself and Doc. There was a prize for that one, too... :-O)

Cheers,

Pretty good picks you got here! I only just recently got into the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and boy they weren't kidding, were they? I agree that the Two Towers just slightly edges out the first movie, and apparently many others think so, as TT is #4 on the Imdb.com charts while the first film is #7. There's no telling what'll happen when Return of the King comes out, but the hits are gonna be insane! "A Beautiful Mind" took a while to grow on me, but I like it more than I did the first several times.

Great picks and a few I'll have to check out now~
See ya

Odd list, I must say... (Reply to this comment)

A Beautiful Mind? C'mon, that simplistic pap. Where's Taxi Driver or any other Scorcese? I guess I can't agree with a few (or more than a few) of your choices, but it was a well argued list. And I can't argue taste :P.

But I do have a pair of corrections. Unless Shawshank Redemption was about a man and his power drill, you probably meant Tim Robbins. And the Coens made Blood Simple three years before Raising Arizona. It's a fantastic noir thriller -- you should read my review of it for the whole scoop :).

Y'know what? I'm a nerd. I can't believe I can sit here and rattle off all this stuff. One wonders if there's more than just Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon fodder in my mind.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaurgh!!!!!! Forgot Hitchcock! I knew it was impossible with just 10 to choose from!

Well, "Strangers on a Train" is my favourite Hitchcock film, not 100% sure it would have made the top ten anyway. Kubrick? Er... 2001? Hated it, I'm afraid. (When I did my best / worst of sci-fi and put 2001 as one of the worst, it was met with dismay by some... but I stand by it!)

Anyway, this is my list and I don't pretend to have even seen all of the recognised classics... give me time, give me time... :-D

Thanks for the comment! :-)
